As a player, I don't see the value.
The players and fans he will attract though...

Great news for Rugby League.

This will do wonders for Rugby League in North America as well as the ESL as a whole.

$5MIL a season not too bad either. Great way to retire!

I just don't understand the value of this deal. Even if they offered a third of that, it still likely would have been enough to entice him to sign. It's just crazy money and if any player doesn't deserve that kind of pay day, its $BW.. Especially at age 34!

We’ll known around the world , French Canadians may known him from Toulon etc and the world stage of rugby maybe bring in numbers , they have a big following in Canada.. if they crack super league top tier then it’s gonna be great for rugby league .. America may be next

I guess he put himself in the position to get the big offers. Weather it be negative or otherwise, we all make our own luck, and I have NO doubt in his position at this point/age in life you’d be silly not to take the money an run. He’s money bill, gotta live up to your name..!!

No surprises here. They're saying the SBW Wolfpack deal is $10 million over 2 years. Would've been absolutely stupid if he didn't accept the offer.

Latrell must be thinking he was 2 weeks too late.
Maybe we could take him back after he's finished at 36. He'd probably be more fit then than Joey Leilua who will then be 29. That's more the type of player our board are interested in signing apparently over guys like Mitchell. Not worth spending an extra 200K

Isn’t the deal inclusive of a Netflix documentary, part ownership of the club, salary and other promo stuff?

To be honest he was one of the largest adidas athletes in the world at one stage. So he does have a following. And for a team with hardly any publicity or following he will do wonders. Will be the biggest name in ESL and will play in a league he never has. So makes sense.

And even though he won’t be paid 100k a week (I’m sure most is in external deals then actual salary). He works out to be a steal. And will only cost them 400k out of the cap.

And...... he goes to a league he can still dominate.

Im sure our board would have been happy with the business and promotional opportunities sonny would bring. Bad thing is they would rather split our cap on “2-3 solid players”. Unfortunately solid doesn’t get you huge sponsorship deals.

It actually scares me a bit thinking of the game developing a large following in the US. The amount of money they throw at athletes makes me think Australia and the UK would become the equivalent of Ron Massey cup. If true that they're able to offer 5m/season to someone that's pretty much at retirement age, how long before they start scalping the best talent in the NRL.

That's the biggest waste of money ever, firstly and this just my opinion he's a **** now I've said that he's 34 injury prone, glad he never came back after what he did to our club.

Problem is that we have pay tv rights deals already in place. If it took off to a profitable extent no FTA network in Australia could match American offers to my way of thinking. I don't think anyone that's been in our NRL administration positions of late would have the nous to keep our financial position competitive.

If they set up a professional competition in the US eventually it might be beneficial due to their huge population in terms of producing excess players. But it's always going to be hard to match the income for a professional Sport when they have a larger population, more potential sponsorship etc. For 5-10 years at least I think they'd pick the best of our talent up with very little effort. Just compare the benefits for a sponsor like Nike wanting the exposure to the larger audience in the US. We couldn't compete against this kind of financial pressure when it comes to luring talent.
