I saw this on FB from the MMM social and thought it would make an interesting conversation here.
If you could make one rule change in the NRL what would it be? I'd like to see a 5th sub for emergency that only gets activated if a player is unable to return due to HIA.

I would overhaul the sin bin system. Players that commit fouls within the defensive 10m will be automatically sent from the field behind the dead ball line until the completion of the next set.

Could cause some annoying grey areas when refs wrongly penalise players who are deemed to tackle someone in the air. Would work well for annoying blockers on kicks though.

Way too many:
1. Bring back the shoulder charge/big hits.
2. Stop mid season contract negotiations outside current club.
3. If a player fakes/plays for a penalty they are sinbinned for 5 minutes.
4. Absolish scrums. Straight hand over and tap.
5. Make field goals worth 3 points not 1 (this will make close games even closer).

If you kick from 10m or less and it goes dead. No 7 tackle set. Just a 20m restart. IMO It has killed (or seriously wounded) attacking kicks
And also if your player knocks on in an attempt to score a try... and that's a 7th tackle set?

Stupidity from the NRL.

The reason this rule was brought in place was to eradicate halves taking fullbacks out of the game by kicking it dead in goal on purpose. Just dumb.

I'd also like to see:
1. Less points for a try from a bomb (maybe 2 instead of 4).
2. A 30m restart if a kick goes dead in goal.
3. To stop players going down with ball, if you get caught with ball on last tackle inside opposing teams 20 it's a 7 tackle set. That would spice things up a bit with kicks and possibly even chips in general play, plus allow sides to get out of danger zone easier.

Mate you are kidding.

A 2 point try for scoring from a bomb but 3 points for a field goal?

How would you determine wether it’s a chip or a bomb? Do you have a certain height in which it will become a 2 point try? Please.

They need to make more ways for teams to potentially catch up and create closer games.

EXAMPLE 1: If a teams behind by 2 points near the end of a game, field goal could put them in front.
EXAMPLE 2: On 5th tackle so many teams just hoist the ball up and hope for the best rather than a grubber or putting it through the hands (far more exciting).

If you look back at league in years gone by aspects like the chip to wingers, and even things like grubbers are slowly disappearing from the game. It's time to bring them back :grinning:

But your chip to the wingers will now only net 2 points so you are not promoting that at all.
You are encouraging a field goal shootout.

1. A transfer period that runs through October and November. Every team must have their 30 man NRL squad sorted out by December 1st. After that no player can join another team until October the next year. All player transfers and free agent signings happen in these 2 months.

2.Go back to 1 ref.

3. Re-introduce the 5min sin bin. Refs are too scared to send a plyer off for 10 min.

4. If you kick the ball out from the attacking 20m then no 7 tackle set. That only happens if you kick it dead from outside the 20m.

5. 5 reserves. Once you come off you can't come back on. Would allow teams to attack more in the final 20 minutes of games and allows the smaller guys to have a bigger impact.

6. Bring back the shoulder charge. If a player injures another player with a bad shoulder then the penalty is heavy.

7. Origin is on stand alone weekends.

8. Get rid of scrums completely. Just make it a play the ball.

9. Add Perth and another Brisbane team.

10. Introduce a rookie draft. Every team should have a 30 man NRL team and 30 man reserve grade team and that's it. Every year every player not contracted to a team can enter the draft. Gives the lower teams a fair chance to grab the next Cleary/Ash Taylor and saves teams a lot of money by not having to spend on their junior teams. No one under 18 can be contracted to a NRL club.
