News Round 1 Predicted Teams: Bulldogs

Just had another look at our top 30 and it is clearly the best roster we've had in years. At least the usual suspects that cop a caning in here could get a job done if required. Those players at the bottom of most dogs fans lists at least have NRL experience and have actually performed pretty well. My confidence in our Doggies having a great year is the highest since those heady days of the early to mid 2000's.

I agree ... whilst we may be lacking a superstar type player our strength is a deep 30-man squad ..... Possibly the deepest of any squad in the NRL in my opinion.

You don't think Crichton is a super star player, interesting.

Thats a little bit nit-picky TT.... i am sure you know what i mean.

However, seeing as you find it INTERESTING, I'll elaborate.

Perhaps we are lacking an X factor type ..... :grinning:

I already rebuked that false claim.

Should be linking the source of these articles DJ. I know it's from the roar after reading it. But links are essential.

I think there's some shit opinions at the end of that. The last bloke shitting on Sexton is a bit rough. He was growing as a footballer every week IMO. given it was about the most NRL he'd seen in a season after debuting young, I expect he's still not quite at his best. But he was on a good trajectory. I get a bit sick of hearing Luai get the credit he does. Not saying he's a dud. But it'll be interesting to see if he's still as highly rated post season 2025 after stepping into a struggling team.

Mahoney cops more than is deserved IMO. I agree that he just needs to focus on the game and keep his mouth and attitude in check to avoid the issues with referees targeting him. There are loads of players who sledge, but he's the only one who's been to threatened by a referee for it.

As far as X factor goes, I think we're basically a side with a lot of players capable of doing something special. It's all well and good to have that one player that's incredibly gifted. But how many premierships did Thurston win. Likewise Andrew John's was considered an X factor player and only won a single comp that was divided into SL and ARL. So I'd rather have a roster that doesn't rely on one player to carry their fortunes.
John’s won 2 comps. 1997 and 2001.

The Bulldogs surprised many with their charge to the 2024 finals but they will have to carry the weight of expectation as the club celebrates its 90th anniversary in 2025. It's a burden Canterbury appear well-placed to shoulder, with coach Cameron Ciraldo and captain Stephen Crichton no strangers to pressure.

The Bulldogs will carry a relatively stable squad into 2025, with Josh Addo-Carr the highest profile departure. Experienced recruits Sitili Tupouniua and Marcelo Montoya will provide leadership and depth while Enari Tuala will provide added firepower out wide.

Perhaps the biggest inclusion this year will be the return of English forward Ryan Sutton, missed the entirety of 2024 with injury. The prop is expected to line up throughout the pre-season challenge and could give the pack size and muscle up front if he can remain healthy.

Bronson Xerri was one of the revelations of 2024 in his return from a doping ban and he will play a key role in the side's quest to finish inside the top four.

Those premiership hopes will also hinge on the continued development of halves Matt Burton and Toby Sexton as they work to unlock the team's full potential.

Teenage halfback Mitchell Woods is still far from the finished product but could earn an NRL debut throughout the year.

As for the forward pack, Josh Curran proved one of the buys of the year last season and is set to lay the foundation up front alongside Max King, Sam Hughes and Reed Mahoney.

Predicted Round 1 Team

  1. Connor Tracey
  2. Jacob Kiraz
  3. Bronson Xerri
  4. Stephen Crichton
  5. Enari Tuala
  6. Matt Burton
  7. Toby Sexton
  8. Max King
  9. Reed Mahoney
  10. Sam Hughes
  11. Viliame Kikau
  12. Jacob Preston
  13. Jaeman Salmon
  14. Bailey Hayward
  15. Josh Curran
  16. Sitili Tupouniua
  17. Ryan Sutton

Some interesting choices there;
Tuala ahead of Wilson and Montoya
Of course the Salmon haters will be all over it
Mann's absence is interesting
Ditto Hays
And the assumption that Sutton is going to be fit to play

NRL.com has Mann listed as having a broken clavicle and won't be ready till Rd 1 - no trials? I honestly can't see us buying all these bigger blokes and still playing both Bailey and Salmon unless we get a few injuries. Sutton's no chance for rd1 but Tuala wouldn't surprise me TBH.

Not 100% sure on age or availability of Flegg lads ....

Not convinced about selection for NRL #5, #17

Sutton will only ever play for us in 1st grade if there are injuries...the bloke was a terrible buy from Barrett on huge coin
