After watching panthers win there 4 games this year and 3 of them scoring a lot of points , do use think barret actually had a big part in there attack last year? Panthers lost few experience players in there side and don’t have barret there as there attacking coach like was said previously and they are still performing very well

I was hoping that it was all because of Barrett and that we would see Panthers in a decline however as you've pointed out, not the case.

Yes he's the one who put the attacking structures in place. Penrith have obviously decided to stick to those structures as they should
Also the Penrith players are actually the ones who were giving Baz credit for their improved attack...it wasn't Baz himself

Exactly. They didn’t just learn this attack in the off season. Their squad is simply much better than ours and have been playing together for more than 3 games. Simples

If you watched last night's game against Manly, you'd have seen how the Penrith players instinctively follow the ball, and run themselves back on side if a play looks like happening. You might have also noticed:

Manly had the rub of the green from the ref.
Manly had more than an even share of possession. Not the 30% we had against the Panthers.
Manly received penalties when needed.
Penrith didn't get repeat sets of six against Manly.
Manly had a better line up than the Dogs, including a good attacking halves combo
Penrith were running in second gear against Manly. With us, they were fired up and playing to put us out of the park because of the Burton issue.
Yet, Penrith put 46 points on Manly, but only 28 on the Dogs, despite all the above.

So, maybe we're not as poor as the scoreboard would indicate; although the Broncos game was an utter disgrace.

Correct, you don’t throw away a plan that works.
What Penrith do is not rocket science, they use structures well to isolate Kikau when running that “out-the-back” pass with runners in motion giving Luai a license to play freely.

It’s kind of like the Rabbitohs, everyone knows their attack comes from the left side but stopping it is a different matter.

The difference with the bulldogs is that we have zero X-factor players to draw in players and we execute slow.

Baz built their blueprint, which obviously they're going to keep using. Baz is putting his blueprint on our team, which will take time to take affect until we get better players to execute. Once Burton arrives, we'll be an attacking force next season. I'm confident of that. It's the pack being solidified that we have to worry about.

Not going to give away source. But the riff have it all out there. Big junior base. Who play through the grades together not chopped and changed. Similar to old dogs. They put as much work into juniors as they do firsts. Example the flegg coach sits on video sessions of flegg after wins and losses. Do we or have we been? And there coaches and player all have raps on Barrett as a coach and mentor. He is changing our team and blue print. But it won’t happen over night and we haven’t got the players to compete at the moment. The riff know the only have to identify our gold, silver and bronze players to shut down our game as the rest are not capable of playing heads up football that has alterations to there training program. Des type players. So in short we need to stick to the long game plan and where the results with a possible bright future hopefully not to far away

Ridiculous navel gazing thread.
There are many moving parts to a football club but the ultimate responsibility is with the head coach.

Barrett is now our head coach. He has 3 years to get things right including our attack.

Our skill level and ball handling are terrible.
Our forward pack are creampuffs.
Mr. Barrett has a lot of work to do and he needs to be focused on that. What he did at Penrith is totally irrelevant.

That’s fair as I as a fan also feel frustrated. But the riff started under Gould implementation of there plan. It wasn’t a quick fix and to be honest the first attempt at there plan failed. So they rebuilt it again.
Barrett not sure if he will be coach here in 10 years. But he’s making changes that are sustainable for the future like Griffin did.
You write but our forwards aren’t up to it mainly need a prop and some ball playing back rowers with the game changed our forwards are becoming similar to rugby shorter stockier front rowers tall athletic back row and a hooker with clean service who knows when to run or hold with clean hands. I think our halves next year are sorted. We need a center and some development type players on our wings who can do strong carys.
I look forward to our future with some optimism we are making the write choices moving forward as one from board to coaching staff

My opinion in general regarding clubs like Manly Saints Dogs Cowboys and Broncos and other shit clubs is that Covid and rule changes helped the established clubs and further created a divide between the haves and the have nots

Most of the above mentioned clubs have been going through rebuilds after being successful for so long, for some clubs it was poor coach choices, poor recruitment, retention and forward planning, salary cap issues.

Pre covid rule changes, we could focus solely on defense to combat poor attacking options. And that hid our deficiencies to a point. Set structures were the go, big boring bodies who didnt need to offload was the go. Attacking structures consisted of set plays and sweep to the back. It was simple.

Rule changes last year and this year meant the cream of the crop had free reign to play whats in front of them. Suddenly the smaller players and the attacking geniuses ruled.

That left clubs like ours and the above mentioned in a deeper hole. We dont have attacking players. We don't have the xfactors. What we have left is basic footballers who wouldn't even make panthers reserve grade side.

Its going to take in my opinion another 2-5 seasons before we see a total generational change across the Nrl and the new kids brought in who will need to play heads up footy. It starts from grass roots and that will take time.

Watching Burton play, ado carr etc. They will make a massive difference next year, but we need to clean out as much deadwood as we can and older players who have been through both Hasler and Pay eras need to.make way for new blood who arent entrenched in losing and have confidence and skill.

This will take time too. Its sad to see our club go through this period. There will still be more crap and heartache before we get better.

As much as Barrett is going crap atm he will come good eventually. I see it in him where i never saw it in Hasler and Pay. Even though after 3 rounds, it doesn't look like it. It will happen

you dont just magically forget how to attack lol. And they lost a couple of forwards pretty much. Something theyve covered for easily.

That panthers team has come through the junior system together. 5yrs together and talented. Give him a break. His finding his feet, in today's nrl you need big boppers and talented individuals. We Wi be successful when our reserve grade are winning.

The Panthers are in a far different position with a strong group of juniors having moved through the grades over the last few years. We'll hopefully improve with playing to our structures as the season goes on. But our halves and backs are still a bit off being cohesive and getting timing right on set plays. Hopefully that sorts itself out as the roster spends more games together. But structures alone can only take that so far. We need a few great athletes to make them work to best advantage and right now that seems to be a part of the issue. The Panthers junior base has allowed them to develop plenty of athletes to implement their structures, we're in a position where we have to recruit some and hope that we see a few juniors step up while we look to source other good youngsters.

I think by the end of the season a lot of improvement will be seen, but at the moment we have a group of players struggling to implement all they have learned in a game that has been sped up a lot by rule changes. It's applied a level of difficulty to things that means transitioning from a side who were taught to run hard and tackle harder into a play smart style is taking some time. It's easier for teams that have learned their structures to apply that in a game that has sped up than for a side that doesn't have it ingrained to do on the fly.

They haven't missed him that is for sure. Just a good culture there at the moment, even when they lose key players like Api, Edwards or Cleary their replacements seem to just step right into the role. Seems like it's the same for their assistants, next guy in steps up.

We definitely need to buy in and have confidence inTB ability to steadily get us out of this mess.
Unfortunately Burton & JAC are not enough next year
I would say a minimum of another 3 top liners to bring us up to speed
