The Canberra Raiders are investigating allegations fullback Jack Wighton was involved in a serious incident at an ACT nightclub before the start of the season.

The Daily Telegraph is reporting that Wighton was out with a friend when the pair allegedly became involved in an argument with a group of men which later escalated into a fight.

The Canberra Raiders are aware of an incident involving Jack Wighton and have been cooperating with ACT Policing on their investigation.

The Raiders have notified the NRL Integrity unit and will be not making any further comment as the incident is an ongoing police investigation.

....

So this all apparently unfolded before the start of the season, yet Raiders have only notified the NRL IU now?

Highly unlikely, but would love for the incident to be serious enough to force Raiders to sack him... then for us to pick him up for 2019 to play left centre where he belongs :D

This article explains more and doesn't sound good for him.

The Canberra Raiders season from hell is getting worse, with star fullback Jack Wighton the subject of an ACT Police investigation after an incident earlier this year.

It is alleged Wighton was involved in a fight at a Civic nightclub with multiple people, believed to have occurred two weeks before the start of the NRL season.
The Raiders have confirmed they are aware of the incident and have notified the NRL integrity unit. ACT Police is believed to have CCTV footage and has been investigating the circumstances for almost two months.
News of Wighton's alleged involvement will put pressure on the Raiders to stand him down from NRL duties until the investigation is complete.

The Raiders have been aware of the incident involving Wighton for some time but have been waiting for ACT Police to take action. They refused to comment about the incident when contacted in March.

It wouldn't be unusual for an investigation to take a few weeks - especially if there were a number of potential witnesses or people to be interviewed/charged.

But it does sound serious

He is worth one or two errors a game. Incident under investigation for two months and only revealed now? Kept hush hush for a reason I guess and just shows that you can hide more than inept politician in Canberra....

Too many politicians under the rug.

This one just didn't fit under there.

Poor bastard should have signed with the Broncos. Now they know how to sweep things under the rug.

They splurged on bigger rugs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As expected Raiders sticking by him. Meanwhile Brad Abbey seen doing a happy dance as he knows his first grade fullback spot isn't far away.

Apparently punched on with a group of guys.

https://www.nrl.com/news/2018/04/11/raiders-fullback-jack-wighton-pleads-not-guilty-to-assault/

Wed 11 Apr 2018, 10:30 AM
Raiders fullback Jack Wighton has pleaded not guilty to assault charges in Canberra court over an alleged altercation outside a nightclub in February.
The 25-year-old fronted ACT Magistrates Court on Wednesday morning to answer nine charges including common assault, inflicting actual bodily harm and public urination.
The fullback has been granted an adjournment in his case until July 10, and is expected to take his place in the Raiders line-up for Saturday's clash with Parramatta.
The NRL and Canberra have indicated Wighton would not be stood down until the matter is resolved by the courts, with the Raiders confirming via a press release on Wednesday.
"The club will allow Wighton to continue to train and play with the club during this period," the statement said. "The Raiders continue to work with the NRL Integrity unit and have informed them of the latest developments."

FULL LIST OF CHARGES:
  • Three counts of reckless or intentionally inflicting actual bodily harm.
  • Five counts of common assault.
  • One count of urinating in a public place.

Should be an NRL wide rule... if you are charged by police with an offence, you CANNOT take the field till the matter is dealt with in court. Afterall, apparently CCTV footage is available AND police have laid charges so it's not just a case of he said/she said.

With those charges, surely thats an NRL career ender... then again Matt Lodge defence will come into play.

If that's the case he's screwed pillow...

Either that or being recruited by Broncos.

He’s a junior state boxing champ. Kid can fucking throw them. Wait til the CCTV footage gets released of him flogging the off duty cop and his mates lol.
@Mitch Connor were they all cops or just one? Sounds like he's all kinds of fucked.

and much rejoicing from Raiders fans as they can get a new fullback.

Raiders probably secretly hoping he gets pulled by the NRL so it doesn't count in their salary cap.

Well; the "ALLEGED" incident(s) took place on Feb 3 this year and it wasn't until April 3 that charges are finally laid by police. Prolonged investigation I guess, but how long was the information in the possession of Canberra of the issue and why such a delay in advising the Integrity unit, even if charges had not been laid. Investigations were ongoing for that period of time and at his court appearance he pled not guilty to all charges. Case has been adjourned until July 10 meaning the Raiders definitely have his services until then, end of round 17 at least.

Let us not forget he has been charged on all counts by the police and reports are that CCTV footage 'shows' conclusively that he was involved in the brawl. He is facing nine charges from the 'alleged' altercation, including common assault, inflicting actual bodily harm to at least four victims, and also faces a charge of urinating in public. The Integrity unit was said to be waiting for charges to be laid before they would act. Just what has been that action ? Sweet FA from all indications.

Reports are that the Raiders are tight in the cap so to lose him for the remainder of the year means that 6 months of his salary will count under the cap at least, leaving them less money to play with if he was to be let go . They cannot afford to stand him down monetarily or player wise hence he will play on until at least appearance time in court and probably beyond if a continuance is sought and granted.
