The NRL could approve a loan system this week. This is how it will work

The NRL is exploring the introduction of a loan system just before the August 1 deadline.
With clubs facing an increased injury toll and unable to bring reinforcements from the NSW or Queensland Cup due to bubble regulations, the NRL will look to approve an official loan system before the week is out.

The Roosters, for example, are incredibly short on outside backs with injuries to Brett Morris, Joseph Suaalii, Billy Smith and Matt Ikuvalu all sidelined for the rest of the season.

“This is a developing story and I expect it to intensify over the next day or so,” The Daily Telegraph’s David Riccio told NRL Tonight on Fox League.

“The NRL had a phone hook-up with the CEOs and football managers over the last 24 hours to talk over a situation that is becoming an increasing problem for clubs – that’s their playing stocks and their ability to field teams.

“We are seeing clubs being stretched injury-wise and Covid-wise, both personal and for bubble breaches.

What the NRL are looking at it an in-house transfer system for the remainder of the season. It wouldn’t include finals and the grand final.

“It means players from clubs can switch immediately to fill gaps that are increasingly becoming a problem at certain clubs i.e. the Roosters, Warriors, the Dragons and the Sharks.”

Last year, the Storm and Tigers completed a loan move involving Harry Grant and Paul Momirovski, while earlier this month Warriors prop Jamayne Taunoa-Brown joined the Dragons.

The Warriors also brought Daniel Alvaro and George Jennings in last year when a number of players opted to stay in New Zealand.

Riccio revealed that the new legislation, the two clubs can come to an agreement that a player can make an immediate swap for a determined period – be it one game, two games, three games.

The player would then need to return to their previous club before the finals and under the proposal being considered they would have to return to their parent club if that club picked up more injuries.

This is great as a start but what NRL really needs is a player trade system

How is it good?
So top 4 teams can cherry-pick loans for 3 months of a season from bottom 4 shit?

Great. Another sweeping change without any notice to suit the top eight teams. If the Roosters weren't decimated would this loan system be rushed in for this season? I doubt it...

Of course the NRL didn't forsee restrictive top 30 squad limitations creating problems for clubs. Maybe if they didn't suspend every player for weeks on end for minimal contact and artificially speed up the game which leads to more injuries then we wouldn't have these issues in the first place?

Going to raid the bottom 8 sides for finals lol, probably pickup Coates or some bs
Yep it's bullshit, if shit like this gets out of hand I'll walk away from league... Junior leagues have checks and balances in place to stop this, also with NSW cup how you have to play X amount of games if you are to drop back from higher grade etc.
Just bunch of corrupt dogs running the game

The loan system has been in place since last year. We loaned Poasa Faamausili to the Warriors for 5-6 games last year, this is nothing knew.

Joke of a decision. Just makes this mickey mouse competition even more so. What's next, if a team is getting a flogging on the scoreboard at halftime a few players swap jerseys to even it up a bit? Tinpot fucking under 8's competition. If the season gets called off it'd be a blessing, Peter V'jankle is on acid.

teams would only get players off contract or not in the 17. Teams arent going to give their best players.

There's a big difference between loaning a player to a bottom four club during the middle of the season and bottom four clubs loaning players to finals teams at the end of the season.

No player movement should be allowed this late in the season and those players shouldn't be finals eligible.
