If the NRL threatened to exclude PNG from the NRL competition because the PNG Government sidled up to China, they would at the very least be voted out at the next election or quite possibly overthrown in a coup. That's how seriously PNGers hold rugby league and no Government is going to risk losing it. Yes, it is that big a deal.

China will just roll out of the pacific scurrying away cause Albo threw our tax dollars at them. They will find a backdoor and will continue to be aggressive as they have been for years. Let's see how it plays out.

Not the point, the objective is to entice the PNG Government to say no to China setting up military bases in PNG. The reason they say no is because they know that they will be voted out at the next election by the Rugby League mad PNGers when the NRL kicks them out. Nothing entices a politician to say no like losing his job.

For sure China will find somewhere else, but the chances of it being PNG are drastically reduced.

For a start, there is a ban on using uranium in this country, and that was put in place by Peter Dutton's party decades ago. To overturn the ban, every state must vote in favour.

Second, Rugby League has a huge following in PNG, and being part of the NRL will cement ties with Australia that China cannot match.
The previous government was asleep at the wheel when China did a deal with the Solomon Islands. The present government does not want the same to happen closer to home.

Yeah, all 900 million of them would be terrified when we arrive in our half dozen landing ships, with no air cover because we don't have a carrier, and our planes haven't the range from Australia. A few missiles our way, and we'd be crying out for it to stop.

Seriously, people should do proper research and not rely on macho websites for their facts.

China buys all it needs from here, and has interests in mines and businesses. If we cut trade with China, we'd be the first to go broke.
 
I can't see players other than PNG natives playing long term for this team. It might be nice to have resort style living for a while, but the young guys will want to go out & find young girls (& boys for some - I hear Toby Rudolf is interested) & where will they get their drugs? What are the drug laws in PNG?

Will the PNG authorities look the other way to ensure the NRL team survives?

China's not scared of the US, Russia, North Korea, Germany, England or Japan. You reckon we can scare them based on what our Government spends money on?

The NBA has the Toronto Raptors and used to have the Vancouver Grizzlies. The NHL has 7 Canadian teams. The MLB has the Toronto Blue Jays. The NFL has all of its teams in the U.S but play regular season games in England, Germany, Brazil etc.
