Peachey signs league deal with Widnes
AAP
People power has helped English Super League battlers Widnes secure veteran Cronulla fullback David Peachey in a two-year deal.
While Sharks president Barry Pierce said an official announcement from Cronulla would not be made until Thursday, the English club trumpeted the signing of the former NSW fullback thanks to a little help from their friends.
Supporters group Vikings Quids In donated a cheque for STG20,000 ($A47,700) towards what is widely regarded as the club's biggest signing since dual international Jonathan Davies.
VIQI members donate a cheque a week to help strengthen the Vikings squad but the offering for Peachey was easily the biggest single donation the group has made.
It ends an 11-year relationship for Peachey who first ran on for the Sharks in 1994's opening round.
The 31-year-old has scored 105 tries in 221 NRL matches and earned his sole NSW honour in 2000 while also representing Australia in a 1997 Super League Test.
"I am really looking forward to coming to England and starting another chapter in my career," Peachey said in a statement.
"I visited England in 1997 for the World Club Championship and enjoyed my time there.
"When Widnes gave me the chance to move to Super League I was pleased it the offer came from one of the clubs that has performed on a world stage.
"I accepted the offer because I am certain the club can once more attain their position as a club that challenges for honours.
"I am looking forward to playing my part in that rise and to working with Frank Endacott who is a world renowned coach."
Widnes sits second last on the Super League ladder this season with five wins from 18 matches but Vikings coach Endacott expected Peachey to help turn around the club's fortunes.
"I am excited about the signing of David. I have coached against him on many occasions over the years and know exactly how dangerous he can be," he said.
"His is the kind of flagship signing we have been looking for and I think it sends out a message to our fans of how serious we are about 2006.
"I think its superb that VIQI have been able to get involved with his signature and I hope this will channel more of our fans towards the group."
