Pay sees light at Dogs as tension eases
By Scott Bailey, 8 Jul 2018 Scott Bailey is a Roar Guru

Canterbury coach Dean Pay can finally start to see some light at the end of the tunnel after the Bulldogs went within two minutes of recording their first back-to-back wins of 2018.

Canterbury’s 32-28 loss to Canberra on Sunday was easily their toughest of the season after they led 28-14 with six minutes to play.

Rhyse Martin’s 24 points was a record haul for any player in a losing side in premiership history, according to Fox Sports Stats.

But it was the Bulldogs’ second strong showing in a row, after they beat Newcastle 36-16 last week.

The two performances have come since both Aaron Woods and Moses Mbye left the club for salary cap reasons, with the June 30 deadline having passed and players finally feeling some stability for the first time this year.

They are also in direct contrast to Canterbury’s previous performance at Belmore, a 32-10 loss to the Gold Coast which marked a fourth-straight loss in the week before the departure of Woods and Mbye.

“I feel like there is a bit of tension gone out of the place and the boys are a little more settled,” Pay said on Saturday night.

“You can say it doesn’t affect you but I think it does.

“The Titans game wasn’t good enough and we’ve spoken about that.

“We’ve moved on. We played some good footy last week and in patches tonight we played some terrific football.”

Martin was superb for the Dogs on Saturday night, scoring his first career hat-trick in just his sixth game.

His opening try was easily his best, running through three defenders and beating two others to the line as he gave Canterbury the lead early in the second half.

According to League historian David Middleton, his 24 points was also the equal-most points scored by a forward in the NRL-era.

“He played a fantastic game Rhyse,” Pay said.

“I spoke to him about his game after last week and he wasn’t happy with it. He’s fixed it up.

“Twenty-four points is pretty hard to come by, especially one person in the NRL.”

Halves Jeremy Marshall-King and Lachlan Lewis also had their moments.

While their kicking games needed improvement, Marshall-King scored one try and Lewis set up two.

“We’re building each week,” Pay said.

“I’ve got two kids playing in the halves and they are getting better each week.

“We’ve got some blokes that are less than 10 first grade games in – there are four or five of them there – but it’s all about learning curves and we learnt a really harsh lesson (on Saturday night).”

He’s correct when he sais “we’re building each week” the last 2 weeks have proven that especially with attack an scoring a lot more points! And yes 5 mins away from his 1st back to back win as a fg coach that took over this shambles..

But again to get run down like that was very poor an shouldn’t happen. A few more fixes an defence tweaks and it’s looking a lot better!!

Lewis has played 2 first grade games and King 15 - inexperience cost us dearly. With 5 minutes left still being up by 8 halves really should have taken control but instead you had flops like Lichaa taking scoots and getting the ball stripped. Either way you have to look at the positives - haven't seen a 5/8 with that much attack in him since Anasta. Still not sold on King being a half, but he puts in and definitely is an attacking player.

Young kids will learn from it.

Lights must of been out on the dogs left hand side defence when Holland was defending
Hollands shoulder was fucked after the first like 10 minutes of the game.

When your shoulders impinged, it's a prick to get right quickly.

In such situations thats where you go one man out and use your forwards to just hit it up and waste time.

But you get the point I’m trying to get across. I was complimentary to Pay assuming he had half a brain too
Yes mate, I get your point. Maybe Brown would've gone OK maybe he wouldn't. He is not a centre and is not used to defending in the position so it is just as likely we would've leaked the same if not more points down that side. I still remember JJ getting a bath when they threw him in there and he usually defends only one spot in from that. We all seem to think players can just slot in anywhere and life is good. This is elite sport with every position specialised these days. The players spend hundreds of hours reviewing defensive patterns of their opposition to try and get it right. Just throwing someone in never works. Holland was busted. I could see it at the ground - his arm was just hanging but Pay obviously thought a busted Holland was still better than an inexperienced Brown, particularly with Smith on his outside. He's is far too knowledgeable about his players for me to say he was wrong.

Mate for me, having a player who could tackle with 2 shoulders will always be a better option than a busted player. It’s noble of Holland to try and tough it out but everybody could see he was a bloody liability and pay did nothing about it

Honestly, I don't think it was about Holland, he was waving when it first happened to come off. I think the decision was that even with one shoulder Holland was better than Brown in that position. Brown is a half/hooker. He wouldn't know the first thing about defending in the centres, particularly with Croker and Whitehead and Cotric coming at him. Water under the bridge now but with the bench we had there really wasn't much option unless Holland couldn't play at all, which wasn't the case. He was just hampered.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing and yes we are all arm chair coaches but brown is a half by trade, he should be use to defending on the fringes. Shouldn’t be to foreign for him

I don’t see how this is a positive in any way shape or form. Conceding 3 tries within 8 minutes is fkd. Pay has no fucken clue!

Did he have a clue when we scored 3 tries in 10 mins early in the second half or did his "clue" leave the building as he was walking down to the sideline thinking we were going to win? Just asking..... These clues are hard to find sometimes. Do you have any to spare? You seem like a bloke who isn't clueless.......

Raiders are a shit team too. So us scoring wasn’t an achievement in my eyes. But Martin is a beast.
It’s Just like when everyone thought we were gonna shake the Como coz we beat fkn cowboys and I said they were shit.

Lewis has played centre. Perhaps Dean could have moved him into Holland's spot and put Brown to 5/8. But unfortunately Pay just didn't want to use Brown no matter what (whether he had 1 more shoulder than Holland or not :grinning:
