Cronulla’s 2016 premiership win has been called into question despite the NRL’s insistence the club was salary cap compliant when they won the title.

The Sharks copped heavy fines and have had coach Shane Flanagan deregistered by the governing body after CEO Barry Russell self-reported suspicious payments to players discovered in the club’s server.

Last week the NRL announced it had discovered breaches of the salary cap dating back to 2013 after a list of proposed payments to players outside of the cap was discovered, but insisted they did not affect the club’s premiership year.

But on Fox League’s NRL360 on Tuesday night, host Paul Kent questioned the stance, saying the Sharks were salary cap compliant on the day of the grand final but not throughout the season.

“They did cheat the year they won the premiership,” Kent said.

“The NRL were very deliberate in their phrasing when asked several times last week in off-the-record conversations, when they had an off-the-record media briefing, and then publicly later when they stipulated that when Cronulla won the competition they were under the salary cap on the day.

“But they were under the cap because of this. They were cheating, and those undisclosed monetary amounts were not enough, given they were already paying unders for everyone at the club, to get them over the cap.

“But they were systematically cheating that year. “It stepped up a gear in 2017, the year after the premiership. That’s when they formed a separate company with the sole intention of manufacturing third-party sponsorships for the club.”

Including fines for communicating with coach Flanagan while serving an NRL suspension in 2014, the club was whacked with $1.25m in sanctions last week (with $500,000 suspended), and will have a $707,000 penalty imposed on their salary cap to be spread over the 2019 and 2020 seasons.

However, Kent said the penalty did not compare to other clubs who have also breached the rules.

“It’s more systematic than other clubs who have copped harsher penalties,” he said.

.....

For once I 100% agree with him. Something fishy at NRL HQ in regards to that premiership.

Only one in the clubs history and I reckon NRLHQ are overlooking that breach.

I have to agree here. I find it funny that they cheated the cap in 2015, 2017 and 2018 but not 2016. Greenberg was quick to dismiss the claim that they cheated in 2016 as well.

What a super sleuth!

Why don't the Sharks get docked 38 points like we did?

Cheaters clearly prosper in the NRL and I'm sick of our club playing by the rules since 2002. Since 2004 we haven't won shit and if we'd cheated the cap more like every other team maybe we'd be more competitive again.

Yeah I tend to agree with you. How can the day of the GF be free of systematic rorting when they had to rort the cap in previous years to get them into the position they were in.

Remember the big song and dance in 2014 when Fifita was going to go to the Dogs because of a good offer and then when he opened his big mouth Cronulla were suddenly able to resign him and also look at approaching Ennis , Marshall etc.

It would be a poor look in the history books to see the growing list of years where we have no recorded premiers. But I don't think for a moment that they were magically compliant for the one season when they won the GF

He can't see it because he's to busy sitting in his office with the blinds closed and the door locked watching Nrl Player's Porn videos all day long.

I think that particular rabbit hole is so deep the integrity unit would fall in and never be seen again.
Thats fine with me, they might get lost while looking for their own integrity.

Let's all face it. Some clubs have been cheating the whole time, if the NRL was actually honest and serious then it would destroy the game and the only fix would be a new comp. They aren't going to do that.

No, they weren't! I believe they were cheating the cap in 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017 and 2018 but NOT 2016. Common sense, FFS.

And besides only super power teams like Campbelltown, Homebush and sometimes Leichardt Western Tigers, the team from Parramatta that aren't the Wanderers and the most successful team in the NRL, Warriors have cheated the cap. Isn't that right, NRL.

I'll fuck Mia Khalifa, Sativa Rose (young version) and Ava Addams before that happens.

And you can't strip the Roosters of their premierships. All four supporters will be shattered.
