Paul Gallen close to deal for blockbuster fight with UFC cult hero Mark Hunt

Paul Gallen (R) is set to return to the ring for a second blockbuster cross-code boxing match.
Negotiations over a blockbuster trans-Tasman bout between Paul Gallen and Mark Hunt are all-but-secured, with the ex-NRL big hitter and former UFC star set to finally enter the ring for a hotly-anticipated boxing bout.

The duo were close to agreeing a fight in March before COVID-19 forced those negotiations to be shelved.

But Gallen has now responded to reports the fight had been rescheduled to October 30 or 31, telling 2GB radio “It’s looking very promising, it’s looking like it’s going to happen.”

Gallen said: “It’s back on. Obviously it was pretty close to getting done three or four months ago.

“Today I saw the headlines come out as well. I rang the trainer and said mate we need to sort this out.

“Mark Hunt signed a contract (in March), I haven’t been offered a contract.

“He (the trainer) asked me what I want, and I told him what I wanted and he said ‘okay, we can work towards that.’

“It’s looking very promising, it’s looking like it’s going to happen.”

While there was plenty of heated words between the duo at the start of the year, Gallen said the duo had made peace.

“I’ve got no beef with Mark... we’ve got no issues whatsoever,” he said. But that won’t stop him from getting in the ring - and with a point to prove.

“We’re going to get it on,” Gallen said. “I’m not going in there to lose.”

The Daily Telegraph reports four venues are competing for the hosting rights for the clash.

Those venues are Sydney’s Qudos Bank Arena, Spark Arena in Auckland, Newcastle’s McDonald Jones Stadium, and Carrington Park in Bathurst. Each can hold over 20,000 spectators under usual conditions, and promoter Matt Rose told the Telegraph he expects a sellout.

“This fight has attracted huge interest and will be a sellout wherever we decide to take the fight,” he said.

“Gallen is an NRL legend and one of, it not the toughest footballer in the last 20 years, and Mark Hunt is a UFC legend that hits harder than any fight in country.

“It’s scary and makes for a perfect Halloween showdown. I hope to lock away the venue in the coming weeks, before getting the final sign-off from both fighters.”

UFC legend Mark Hunt is one of the hardest hitters in the country.
Hunt, 46, was a cult hero for many UFC fans – known as ‘The Super Samoan’ – before leaving the competition a year ago. He reportedly signed a contract to fight Gallen, 38, in March – and immediately called out the former Sharks’ skipper for running from the clash.

Gallen hit back soon after, saying “Rest assured mate, I don’t need any encouragement. We’ll get the deal done, and the fight will happen. Just give me a week, and we’ll see what happens.”

For fans in both countries, hopefully the deal can finally be done.

Hope Mark sends the bogan drug cheat to the ER.
So do I brother. This is my pros and cons on Mark.

Pros: heavy hitter and plenty of experience.

Cons: Age, agility and the fact he gets rocked easier these days.

That said, he is a one punch knockout specialist. If he can contain Gallens punches I give him a good chance of dropping Gal. But as I mentioned Gals facing Mark on the back end of Mark Hunts career. Hopefully the fact Gallen is a cheat will spur Hunt on, as he hates drug cheats hence his fallout with the UFC.

Not sure what gallens thinking is (obviously lacking in that department). Seems like he is adamant in getting some sort of long term brain injury.

I’m not a fighter myself. But if there was a handful of people I would never step into the ring with for fear of health, one would be mark hunt, also Tyson. You would avoid that like COVID 19 :p

Must be after money? Because no way you’d do such a thing As a footballer for any other reason.

I have boxed since a kid. Know and train with pros and made some money sparring and camps etc with some good athletes in this sport.

Mark hunts cardio and age is a huge issue. That said if he takes it remotely serious he will break Gallen in about 58294924 pieces with one shot. His last ufc fight was a joke and I’m not sure if the hunger is gone or just done.

The whole footy turn fighter shit is a joke. Complete insult to the sport.

Gallen was a exceptional footy player. He’s not a boxers asshole.

That said hunt ain’t boxing.

I was sure Hunt was medically retired from UFC and was not allowed to fight anymore. Too many head knocks or something along those lines.

Don’t need cardio if you get a first round KO

Hopefully good under card, enjoyed watching Liam Wilson over the years he’s a great boxer pound for pound he feels like a whip when he hits, also hoping to see more of jai opetaia, clay waterman if he goes pro, and my fav is Daniel drop bombs Lewis . He is a machine

Hopefully Hunt slips in a few "accidental" elbows to munt Gallen's head even more than it is already.
Hunt is in blue shorts here for people that mightn't have seen him before

He got the shits with the UFC and guys juicing. He got beat by a guy (name slips my memory right now) that was done juicing after and set him off. He still had fights on his contract so he finished them and left. This may also be as @Bulldogs09 mentioned why he didn't look as hungry in his last fight in the UFC.

Edit; it was both Lesner and Overeem who got done juicing. Hunt had faught both fighters consecutively and loss to both. They were then both caught juicing soon after.
