Nasheed here.
Curious what everyone’s thoughts are on our off contract stars at the end of the year.
By my count, we gots 13 off contract.
I believe we have signed 5 (Xerri, Crichton, Samrani, Matai, Booth)
So straight up we need to dumps 5 from the below.
I’m also assuming the Gus comment regarding BBO ‘we will try next year’ was a window dressing comment and his ass fried up. Also who’s to say we don’t pick up another star in the prop or half space like keary.
The off contract is:

Jake Averillo, Fa'amanu Brown, Braidon Burns, Declan Casey, Brandon Clarke, Kyle Flanagan, Samuel Hughes, Jayden Okunbor, Chris Patolo, Josh Reynolds, Luke Thompson, Corey Waddell Hoffman

My thoughts.
The dead I have highlighted in bold;
Averillo: 60/40 re-sign. He has a no frills toilet attitude and can cover positions. Could go either way at this stage.
Brown: 50/50. I don’t see why not? A backup half/rake be an asset. See how he goes this season.
Burns: He gotta go. Not a bad player but there just isn’t room in the centre three quarter space
anymore.
Casey: 50/50. See how he goes yo.
Clarke: Can’t see a future for him if he’s languishing in Massey and we need to rid us of 5.
Flanagan: we all know why. Been done to death. He would be worth a trial and train though if he doesn’t get an offer. Wouldn’t hurt as a third drop replacement
Hughes: 40/60. Been through a few teams. Injured. Not looking good. Just lucky he’s a prop and what we need. Otherwise his obese ass would be out.
Okenbor: 40/60. Hasn’t fired but carved up reserves , and he might get a reprieve as a back/forward head knock utility as Gus said. But I can also see another club give him a lifeline. Tall, strong, black and fast. This prototype is coach porn.
Patolo: Hasnt done anything
Reynolds: old and injured. Just a novelty signing
Thompson: I’d resign him in a heartbeat at a reduced 500k two year deal.
Waddell: He isn’t completely dead but he hasn’t done much in 2 years, so doesn’t look good. We have secind rowers. Will need a strong 2023.
Hoffman: seems to be that guy that’s just hanging around hoping for holes. Train and trail and give him a spot if something opens up.

So as u can see I’ve culled 7.
So it means we have two spots and I think these spots need to go to a sicc half like Keary or Moses, and a strong prop.
If someone else leaves, we can promote Khaleb as we are light in backup halves.

Thanks nasheed

I think unless we sign more forwards we need ton keep Patolo. Averillo and brown to stay. Need the versatile players in case of injuries.

OK RE: Patolo, When Gus sits in front of him to discuss performance and all that, what does Patolo have to persuade a new deal is necessary on this tight human slot budget
Is he better than ogden??
I personally would go hard for Alex twal, i dont think his stocks are high at the moment.

I wouldn't re-sign Thompson for any more than 400k. He hasn't even proved that value for us so it's on potential. AND this would only be if we had enough cap left after signing a proven prop like NAS. That's the priority. Royce Hunt and Thompson would be okay.

"Reynolds: old and injured. Just a novelty signing"
A cruel assessment, but spot on.
At the moment Reynolds is just taking up space in top 30 - is it possible he goes back to second tier contract to allow a middle to be signed - only 7 more rounds till second tier eligible for first grade?

I think they just think 29/30 is same/same but they wanted a motivator in the squad who is backup for a position they are light on

its very worrying frm a squad perspective.
Barrett was very light on with hookers, and centres.
Now we have too many centres but are light on in halves.

If Flanagan gets aids tomorrow, who is 7?

Id rather Brown at half - Flanagan is a good goal kicker and although he backs up well is not creating anything in attack which is the job of a half - play Brown at half and add a genuine forwad to the bench. Despite selecting Okunbor it seems the club has very little confidence in him to defend, otherwise he would have gotten minutes yesterday.

Assuming Pele and Davey are available along with Waddell and someone like Burns/Skelton/ Topine would be a more flexible bench

I remember i was here saying we needed hookers and two weeks in Barrett had to call up that schoolteacher hooker. It was terrible management that even i saw

Rajab controlled NSW Cup game yesterday very well at 7. Keep Brown as 14?

Ciro's bench was a waste for sure.

We still have the options to pick a better 17.

I’m just saying if we don’t have forwards to replace him with that are first grade material then we need to keep him it’s not something I agree with but we used to have problems all over the park with replacements but now it’s a forward problem and halves problem. If we lose burton or flanno then we have reynolds and Karl Op to take a spot.
