Just read a rumour suggesting Barrett has enquired for Paul Momorovski for 2021. Legit no idea if it’s true but someone mentioned it on the West Tigers forum.
Just read it. He said his source is high up at the bulldogs..

Would be great depth for centre though and be worth playing on the wing. I'd be happy if this were true and we didn't already have MWZ...

That’s true. If finals records are your biggest determining factor. But surely you would take these things into account also . . . representative football must be considered, he played 37 origins, 36 of those were consecutive .5 man of the matches. and 38 tests with an exceptional winning strike rate Which Thurston excelled at in comparison to Mortimer and Sterling. Thurston had a better all round kicking game . Was a prodigious goal kicker who scored 2200+points. He won 3 golden boots, 4 Dally M Player of the year awards ,was DallyM halfback 4 times and 5/8 three times and a won Clive Churchill medal. He also played more games and more seasons too.
Yes Thurston had a better kicking game. He did perform better at rep teams but a main factor in his success in Origin was the spine of Slater, Lockyer, himself, Cronk and Smith against a near decade of dud spines in NSW other than Hayne. After Johns and Fitler retired NSW were left with crap halves such as Pearce for most of the decade that Qld won. In terms of Dally M they are also affected by confirmation bias by the "judges" (journalists). Most of them have decided in advance who they will award the points in each game (i.e points to the big name players) if that team won. If you remember Wally Lewis in the 80's origin all he had to do was touch the ball and 10 passes later if Qld scored it was all because of Lewis according to the commentators. Mortimer had a sensational year in 79 and 80 yet never won player of the year. He was the best player in the 79, 80, 85 and 86 GF but never won the Clive Churchill medal/man of the match. The media certainly have their favourites. Given the Cowboys sides were often stacked with rep players during Thurston's career his GF record is dismal compared to Turvey and Sterlo. The quality of halves in the NRL during his career after Johns/Fitler/Lockyer retired was quite weak.

John khoury.
- Benji isn't an option Barrett wants long term solutions not short term.
- hopeful for 2 more signings but not much quality out there for 2021 in talks with a couple players (didn't say names).
- 2 sponsors fighting it out to be sleeve sponsor.
- still confident we can land burton for next year.

@MasterP has been saying it over and over again that Benji isn't an option. If we now have JK saying the same thing, then we can kill the whole Benji rumour once and for all.

Why are people puttung averillo at 6, whats the actual point in putting him at 6 for a year then moving him next year. He needs to have a go at fullback, hes quick and creative, barrett can help him develop further in attack and hopefully defence.

The point that many of us are making is that based on what we have seen he’s not ready to play fullback. The fact is he’s never played fullback at a high level, he has played 5/8, centre and wing. He is demonstrably not ready physically or mentally to face the reality of playing fullback at NRL level, every week. Throwing him in when he is plainly not ready would be inviting him to lose all confidence (refer DWZ for what a loss of confidence does for a fullback). At 5/8 he has players inside and out that can help him through the game, commonly a prop inside and a back rower outside him to help him in defence. At fullback he’s on his own, has to make his own decision, is exposed with nowhere to hide any loss of confidence or deficiencies in his game. He has no experience at organising the defence inside the 30 which a fullback is expected to do.

I don’t believe that any of us doubt his attacking ability, just playing at NRL level week in week out is a tough gig and fullback is one of (if not) the toughest positions to play. The history shows that NRL fullbacks either come through the grades playing fullback (which Averillo hasn’t) and/or spend some time at NRL level playing other positions or coming off the bench until they can demonstrate that they can handle what being an NRL fullback requires.

He's not going to develop many of those skills playing 5/8 and the question that remains to be answered by the "Averillo to 6" crowd is what happens in '22?

Is he going to be immune to the confidence issues if he drops a bomb? Makes a bad read? Doesn't communicate with his defensive line?

The only way we'll find out if he can be our long-term Fullback is playing him there. Now maybe he fucks up a bit and loses confidence. Then we can drop him back to res grade and put Meaney in until Jake is ready for another go.

If he proves that he can handle NRL level playing 5/8 every week then he can move to fullback for 2022. If he doesn’t or he needs more time to get his physical and mental
toughness in place to play NRL fullback then another year at centre may be beneficial. We do have a vacancy there in 2022.

The undeniable fact is he has nowhere near enough fullback experience to play there at NRL level. He doesn’t have remotely enough NSW Cup or decent lower grade experience playing full back. He does have experience playing 5/8, centre and wing in NSW Cup, lower grades and NRL.

Playing him at fullback in NSW Cup and having him train there will reveal any deficiencies which can be worked on outside of the pressure of having to perform at NRL level every week.

History shows us that the vast majority of players who thrive at NRL fullback either come through the grades playing fullback or start of in NRL playing another position and graduate to fullback. Averillo has neither of those covered.

While I am not sure that he is ready for full back, I see a lot of teams running their big boys at him all day if he plays 5/8. That could kill his confidence very quickly........he is not a particularly big boy and his defence at centre last year was not great, albeit mainly lateral movement and reading the play. No doubt he is a talented attacking player and one that we need badly.......but I am just not sure about 5/8.......perhaps a few games at FB in reggies to start the season......by then Meaney will have fallen out of favour.......

At 5/8 in defence he will have the usual prop inside and back rower outside to help, a 5/8 hardly ever tackles one on one. Defending at centre is a much more difficult proposition with more space and pace coming at you forcing instant decisions to be made, which is where experience comes to the fore. That's what Averillo lacks, NRL experience, and at least what 5/8 he has played there on the way up, compared to fullback where he has next to zero senior experience. My view is we either give him NRL experience at 5/8 where he has support around him, or we give him fullback experience in NSW Cup.
