The whole salary cap saga has become a pain in the ass.
What would happen if it was lifted to 1M a year for any one player?

It's not removing back ended deals, it's just "smoothing" them out. Basically you can't heavily backload a contract, but you still can.

In addition to this the NRL Commission have to pass/approve the rule change.

In all honest they should just stop it completely.

There's a thread poking around already on this somewhere I saw earlier. Might be buried in another thread though.

The clubs are fully entitled to negotiate back ended deals, if they have problems with the cap later on its none of the NRL's business unless the cap is breached.
Sometimes its an option the clubs need.

Mr Greenberg said back-ended contracts might help a club in the early years of a player’s contract, but they could severely impact that same club’s salary cap in the latter years.

“These deals can also give clubs an unfair salary cap advantage in the early years of a contract,” he said.
