Brisbane Broncos 2017 NRL Fantasy Guide

NRL Fantasy legend Corey Parker may have retired but Wayne Bennett still has a star-studded team at his disposal at the Brisbane Broncos. Parker's replacement at lock looms as the value Fantasy buy in this squad while a trio of backline stars will also be pushing for keeper status in 2017.

Fantasy guns

Ben Hunt (HLF, $468,000): He may not have matched his 2015 breakout season but Hunt was still the Broncos' best in NRL Fantasy in 2016, matching now-retired Fantasy legend Corey Parker with 49.5 points a game. He ranked third in the league for try assists and kicks in play behind Kangaroos halves Johnathan Thurston and Cooper Cronk, and made more tackles, tackle breaks and offloads than both of those players. Hunt is a safe bet most weeks with the bulk of the Broncos' kick metres, and can thrive when Brisbane wins big.

James Roberts (CTR, $390,000): Only 10 centres scored more than 40 points per game in 2016 – including makeshift centres Manu Ma'u, Tyrone Peachey, Josh Dugan and Tom Trbojevic – so Robert's 41.2 points a game puts him in elite company already. But the upside for the speedster is that he actually had a fairly quiet season by his standards. After scoring 16 tries in 24 matches for the Titans in 2015 Roberts scored just nine in 25 for Brisbane last year, so if the Broncos get the best out of Roberts in 2017 he could rival Fantasy's best centres Jarrod Croker and Joey Leilua.

Wildcards

Anthony Milford (HLF, $434,000): Just about the definition of an NRL Fantasy wildcard, Anthony Milford had probably the biggest spread of scores in the competition last season. He was one of just five players to score 70 or more points on five occasions, but was the only one of those players to score less than 25 in a game – something he actually did four times. When he's good, he's very, very good. But you have to take the good with the bad with Milford.

Josh McGuire (FRF, $457,000): The retirement of NRL Fantasy legend Corey Parker creates a big hole in the Brisbane Broncos forward pack this year, and fellow workhorse Josh McGuire could be the man to fill it. McGuire is no stranger to Fantasy coaches – he made more run metres than any other Bronco last season, scoring 48 Fantasy points a game including five 60+ scores from the front row. But a shift to lock could see McGuire's minutes climb and his tackle counts rise, which in turn could lift his Fantasy average into the 50s.

Cash cow

Jai Arrow (2RF, $218,000): Like McGuire, Brisbane young gun Arrow is another man who could wear Corey Parker's old No.13 jersey in 2017. Arrow gun started at lock in Round 19 last season when Parker was rested after Origin III. The other player to fill in at lock for Parker during the season was Jarrod Wallace, who is now at the Titans. Arrow scored 52 in 54 minutes that week, including 49 points in base stats (tackles and run metres) and no negative stats (missed tackles or errors). Considering his price tag is based on a season average of 23, he will be undervalued if he gets a starting spot in 2017.

Canberra Raiders 2017 NRL Fantasy Guide

The NRL's best attacking team last season is chock full of quality Fantasy players, including the game's two highest-scoring centres. But is fan favourite Shaun Fensom's time as a Fantasy factor finished?

Fantasy guns

Joseph Leilua (CTR, $464,000): With 49 points a game, Joey Leilua was the best NRL Fantasy centre in the league last season. Leilua's been a tackle-break machine for a few years now but his offloading was phenomenal in 2016, and his combination with Jordan Rapana was a key factor in the Raiders being the NRL's most potent attacking side. He can be inconsistent – he had two scores below 25, as well as four above 70 – but on his day he's hard to match.

Jarrod Croker (CTR, $449,000): Croker is the only other centre beside Leilua to post four scores above 70 last season, and ranked a close second behind Leilua for points per game. He's more consistent than his fellow centre and doesn't necessarily need to be involved in try-scoring plays to score well, as the goal-kicker for the league's best attacking outfit.

Elliott Whitehead (2RF, $492,000): One of the best recruits of 2016, Whitehead scored 52 points a game – and showed he was capable of scoring in a variety of ways. The 80-minute forward made just under 40 tackles a game but also contributed six tries, eight try assists and 13 line-break assists.

Wildcards

Jordan Rapana (WFB, $447,000): It's hard to know whether the barnstorming winger can match his tremendous 2016 campaign but it's hard to go past a winger/fullback who averages more than 47 points a game in Fantasy. The game's best tackle-breaker also ran in his fair share of tries alongside Leilua. If you expect the Raiders to be the NRL's best attacking team again this season Rapana could be worth a try.

Shaun Fensom (2RF, $403,000): Once considered one of the elite players of NRL Fantasy, Canberra tackle machine Fensom dropped $158,000 in value last season, averaging less than 43 points a game after being a 55-point player in previous seasons. The old No.13 wasn't even making the Raiders bench by the end of the season so appears to be a long shot to become a Fantasy favourite again in the short term.

Canterbury Bulldogs 2017 NRL Fantasy Guide

Led by one of the fiercest competitors – and one of the most consistent Fantasy scorers – in the NRL, the Bulldogs are a team with a lot of talent. But will you be fitting more than one of them into your starting Fantasy squad in 2017?

Fantasy gun

James Graham (FRF, $541,000): With a season-low score of 39, a season average of 57 and the third-most 50+ scores of any NRL Fantasy player in 2016, the Bulldogs skipper is one of the most reliable players available and an absolute gun in the front row. He doesn't come cheap, but if you want Fantasy's best prop he's your man.

Wildcards

Brett Morris (WFB, $359,000): After playing all his 2015 games at fullback for the Bulldogs, Brett Morris missed the start of 2016 through injury then was used on the wing until his team's one and only finals game. He still managed some big scores – with three straight 55+ efforts after returning from injury – but relied heavily on tries for his points so was quiet when he didn't get across the line (his final three regular-season scores were 23, 13 and 9). If he reclaims the fullback spot from Will Hopoate next season he should become a more consistent scorer.

David Klemmer (FRF, 2RF, $426,000): With Graham and fellow workhorse Aiden Tolman holding the two starting front-row positions at Canterbury, big man Klemmer once settled for a spot on the interchange – where he played seven of his first eight games of 2016. After that though Des Hasler shifted him to lock, where his minutes and Fantasy scores skyrocketed. His Fantasy average lifted from 34 to 48 once he started wearing the No.13 on his back, making him undervalued at the start of the 2017 season if he keeps that role this year.

Moses Mbye (HLF, $424,000): A month into the 2016 season, the Bulldogs were leading the Telstra Premiership and Moses Mbye was averaging 63 Fantasy points a game – boosted by an outstanding 94 in Round 2. The Dogs and their halfback went downhill after that though, with Mbye averaging 41 points per game after Round 4 and Canterbury finishing in seventh place. If Des Hasler's side are to improve in 2017 to once again become premiership contenders, Mbye will need to be a major factor – and his consistency should improve in his second season in the position. If he can lift his average from 44 to 50 he'll be good value at $424,000.

Sharks 2017 NRL Fantasy Guide

Two superstar Sharks forwards will once again be in high demand in NRL Fantasy this season, while one new Kangaroo could also be on his way to becoming one of Fantasy's elite scorers.

Fantasy guns

Paul Gallen (2RF, $538,000): Gallen has been a Fantasy gun for years but has traditionally been a player you avoided picking up until after the Origin period, due to his tendency to best rested in the middle part of the season. With Gallen's representative retirement that's no longer a concern, and while he may be into the twilight period of his career he's hardly slowing down with a league-high 175 run metres per game last season. With 30 tackles per game and the ability to break the defensive line he's one of Fantasy's elite forwards.

Andrew Fifita (FRF, $601,000): He may grab some unwanted headlines off the field but on the field Fifita remains one of the game's most effective players, combining a rampaging running game and a knack for getting offloads away with a surprisingly high workrate in defence. His 63 Fantasy points per game last season was second only to Cameron Smith, and he's odds on to be the most value front-rower in Fantasy once again in 2017.

Wildcards

Matt Prior (FRF, $322,000): One of Cronulla's unsung heroes in the 2016 NRL Grand Final, Prior's minutes increased late in the season and so did his scores. In the first 20 rounds Prior played less than 50 minutes in all but one game; while in the final six rounds of the regular season Prior played more than 50 minutes in all but one game. When playing more than 50 minutes Prior averaged 47.5; when he played less than 50 minutes he averaged 29. So if his big-minute performances continue he will be good value in 2017.

Valentine Holmes (WFB, $301,000): Holmes – now an Australian Test star – scored 31 Fantasy points a game on the wing for Cronulla last season. Those numbers are likely to lift if he gets the chance to replace Ben Barba at fullback in 2017. One of the game's most promising ball-runners, Holmes would almost certainly get more run metres and tackle breaks in the custodian role – making him a probable money earner and a possible Fantasy keeper.

Cash cow

Manaia Cherrington (HOK, $143,000): Former Wests Tigers rake Cherrington could be the new Sharks No.9 this season, replacing the retired Michael Ennis. Ennis scored 41 points per game – well above Cherrington's average of 17 from five games in 2016. Cherrington only played about half an hour per game in those appearances, so a starting spot would guarantee his scores (and price) increase in 2017.

Hey guys, the rest of the player prices can be found on NRL.com under fantasy news. It is a great way to start building your team in preparation for the fantasy season. With a $7 million salary cap who will be in your team?

Note: We will also be starting a tipping competition for those who are interested. Keep an eye over this thread for more details.

Not too sure I've never played supercoach before
Yh i only ever played fantasy years ago..stuck with SC since. Looks like they give out less points for attacking output judging by some of the prices of those players on the list.

NRL Fantasy Files: 26/1/17

A full wrap of the important NRL Fantasy news from the past week that could impact your Fantasy planning for 2017.

The race for the Dragons No.7 jersey is well and truly on, with both Shaun Nona (HLF, $138,000) and Jai Field (HLF, $138,000) named in the Red V's Auckland Nines squad.

Is Josh Addo-Carr (WFB, $305,000) ready to become the next Marika Koroibete? The similarities between the pair are uncanny. Addo-Carr could be in for a big first year in the Victorian capital, but at just over $300,000 he won't come cheap.

Will rookie Gehamat Shibasaki (CTR, $138,000) force his way into the Broncos' backline at some point in 2017?

A broken hand has ruled Matthew Wright (WFB/CTR, $185,000) out of the Auckland Nines, but the Sea Eagles backline utility will be available for Round 1.

In other injury news, Knights recruit Rory Kostjasyn (HOK, $210,000) could miss the next 12 weeks after a throat injury sustained in training. Current estimates have the Cowboys premiership-winner returning to the field in Round 7 or 8.

How is each NRL side shaping for Round 1? The NRL.com team put together their best guesses based on the players available for the opening round of the 2017 season.

Korbin Sims (FRF, $349,000) has re-joined the Broncos, and is in line to fill their front-row void for Round 1. But according to his new teammates, the former Knight isn't guaranteed a spot in the 17 against the Sharks.

Will Ryan Hoffman's (2RF, $321,000) minutes take a hit in 2017? New Warriors coach Stephen Kearney is considering other options as captain, which could indicate that Hoffman might spend some time on the bench as Kearney ushers in the next wave of young back-rowers at the club.

While on the topic of forward rotations, the Cowboys look set to shake things up in 2017 in an effort to hand youngster Coen Hess (2RF, $267,000) greater game time. With James Tamou and Ben Hannant having departed, Gavin Cooper or Ethan Lowe could be moved to the middle at times to accommodate the Mt Isa product.

Peter Mata'utia (WFB/CTR, $220,000) and Dylan Phythian (WFB, $143,000) are in a two-horse race for the Newcastle No.1 jersey for Round 1, but the more experienced Mata'utia might just have the edge over his teammate.

NRL Fantasy will be back soon for 2017 with a new look and new features!

I have been in touch with the NRL Fantasy team and they are working hard to ensure the competition launches as soon as possible.

We are also working on sorting out prizes for the Fantasy & Tipping competitions. In the meantime have a look at the fantasy news section on nrl.com to check out all related news (e.g. Player prices, club guides etc.)

Thanks
