The Bega Valley Shire Council has passed a motion to provide up to $7000 of in-kind support for an NRL exhibition match in Bega next year.

However, resistance to the support from councillors Sharon Tapscott and Jo Dodds has raised a few eyebrows.

The Canberra Raiders will take on the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs at the Bega Recreation Ground in February, but Crs Tapscott and Dodds voted against the motion to provide support for the game.

“I have a problem with inviting people here with less than exemplary public profiles. We need to send a message that enough is enough. Men’s teams need to be worth looking up to and worth our money,” Cr Tapscott said.

Cr Dodds also voiced disapproval for providing support on a moral basis.

“I find it quite odd I'm not allowed to speak on anything other than the money. It goes to much more than the money being spent on the game,” Cr Dodds said.

“They've not proved themselves to be good community leaders or standard bearers.”

Meanwhile, on the other foot, council has been in talks with the Canberra Raiders investing in the Bega ground in return of local support for their proposed Centre of Excellence.

The Raiders-Bulldogs game, scheduled for February 23, could see an influx of between 5000 and 8000 league supporters from within and many from outside the shire. More than 6000 attended the 2011 NRL exhibition match between Canberra and the Melbourne Storm.

While the two councillors morally object to the current state of the players in the game, the benefits the community could stand to gain from such a fixture are clear – as are the potential pathways and promotion the spectacle provides for upcoming footballers.

Cr Russell Fitzpatrick said it well.

“To my knowledge there are eight kids playing first grade NRL in Group 16 who I coached, but here we are about to demonise a code. We set who we want to be our role models,” he said.

Opinions abound over the negative public attention the NRL at times attracts, but arguments could be made about all the good that can come of the national code, too.

Johnathan Thurston donated his 300-game boots to auction for the Mayoral fund for the Tathra bushfire, raising about $37,000. To the BDN’s knowledge, no objections were raised about this donation and its origin.

Cr Mitch Nadin said there would be palpable benefits from the visit with both clubs opting in to community wellbeing workshops alongside the obvious financial gains for the local Group 16 rugby league body.

“There are enormous community benefits,” he said. “Our local shops, our economy, our profile is raised, kids become more athletic, and it helps bond our community through a large social and cultural event – there is no downside!”

Dub-Vegas already has enough attractions as it is. It does need to add the excitement of an NRL Trial game.

Once asked R Castle if any plans to bring a game to us as we have had a couple before, her answer not likely as we need power and lighting etc.
True story and she was running this place no wonder we are in a mess.

You can blame this on the media. Putting our mad Monday photos on the front page is the reason for this objection. No one in the public knew about the boys getting naked until Monday morning on the other foot they don’t put the stories of Adam Elliot and his good work in the community on the front page. Main stream media has a lot to answer for

It wouldn't be just critisism of the Bulldogs would it? Raiders have Wrighton etc so those women would have taken more offence at physical violence surely.

I assume they are talking about Canterbury and mad monday?
They are actually entitled to their opinion. But aren't they being too precious? Does Canterbury benefit in any way from the $7000 "in kind support"? Reads like it's entirely a Canberra thing.

Yes sir they are.

I think that money goes to whoever is hosting the game (in this case the Raiders). $7000 is piss weak money for the doggies.

I can't blame them to be honest. Sounds like a few of their representatives actually give a shite about their area and the kids. I think they did just enough in their statement. We aren't stupid enough to say no to this event and everything it brings BUT we do protest about the stupid look players and the NRL keep sending towards ourselves and the kids. As a community I would be reluctant to be spending what little money the local area has towards a billion dollar sport coming to town. The NRL should be covering it....perhaps out of the 125k easy money they just made.

Spot on. There must be some perspective and truth in journalism standards set by the NRL when negotiating the media rights in the future...that's if there is much left of the game to attract any bidders in 5 years time.

This death by a thousand cuts publicity and negative attitude prevailing atm is having an effect and taking a toll...can't see many 6 year olds being encouraged by mum to play RL.

Some responsibility must be sheeted home to the scab journos and editors who only feast on the rotting carcass left with their constant twisting and sensationalism of events.

I hope they and the NRL start realising what damage they are doing to the game. It can't sustain the constant kick in the guts.
