Said it once will say it again, a lifelong knights supporter mate of mine rates this kid highly. So will be keen to see him have a crack.

Now everyone can see what the hype isn't about. Unfortunately he's debuting against Parra so they'll hardly test him in defence (they have worst attack and third worst defence in the comp).

They don't have any choice. Their only other fullback options are already playing in their backline (or halves), which would mean recruiting from NSW Cup (out of position and dead last on ladder), Flegg (Matthew Cooper - only 2 games back from injury), or naming Meaney.

Between Watson and Cogger, there is no competition, Watson wins every day of the week in the halves alongside Pearce.

Put simply, Watson has won more games this year in the halves than Cogger.

In 2018 fullback has been Ponga every single game (now injured).
In 2017 fullback was shared between Dylan Phythian (sacked for second drug breach), Brendan Elliott (now at Titans), Dane Gagai (now at Souths), Peter Mata'utia (now at Leigh Centurions), and Nathan Ross (named on bench as returning from ISP/groin injury).
In 2016 fulback was shared between Jake Mamo, Jaeleen Feeney, and Dane Gagai (all no longer at club).

So most of Knights fullback options have moved on, leaving only Meaney and RossDog they could call on.
Fuck I hope he has a blinder so you shut the fuck up about him. Shame it is against parra coz that will be your excuse. I really hope he does well with us so you can eat your words coz all you've dished out about him is negativity. Give the dude a chance

Just get this real Luke Patten vibe about him. Have said it before and will say it again.

Not a bad thing by the way.

Luke patten wouldn’t cut it as a first grade fullback in today’s game in my opinion.

NICK MEANEY
Club: Newcastle Knights
Position: Fullback
Age: 21
Intrust Super Premiership games played: 31
Representative honours: NSW Under 20s 2017

He has superstar written all over him and with fullback Kalyn Ponga suffering a hamstring strain last week, crafty fullback Nick Meaney will make his first-grade debut against the Eels this Friday night.

A genuine X-Factor with an uncanny ability to create something from nothing, Meaney will be looking to combine prominently with halfback Mitchell Pearce, with the star halfback also making his return after a long stint on the sidelines.

Signing with the Bulldogs for the 2019 season, Meaney will look to make a name for himself this weekend after showing plenty of promise through the junior grades and Intrust Super Premiership competition.

With unwavering potential and a brilliant ball-playing ability, the 2017 NSW Under-20s No.1 will cause plenty of havoc for the Eels defence as he looks to start his first-grade career in style.

Lol. Must have relos working for nswrl media dept

Nah The Kennel Hype Squad (as evidenced in this thread) wrote that for him.

There's a difference between being negative and being realistic. Some of you are going on like he's the lovechild of Ponga and Inglis (in his prime), with the speed of Addo Carr and ball playing ability of Tedesco.

He isn't. He's Brett Lane / Brent Crisp / Patrick Templeman Mk2, with the POTENTIAL to turn into a Patten like fullback. He has shown nothing to indicate he'll burst onto the scene and rival even Mbye or Hoppa as a fullback. Both players are well ahead of him.

PROS: He has pace, and his positional play in attack is okay (but he doesn't get involved much).
CONS: His defence needs a shitload of work, as does his positional play in defence. Arm grabbers in NSW Cup get torn apart in NRL. Just look at Brad Abbey when he played for us.

Knights (even with a decent halves pairing) are dead last in NSW Cup with the worst defence in the comp, and Meaney often features in the Try Cause stats for them.

He was the KNIGHTS NSW Cup Player of the year in 2017 (when they finished in 7th and bombed out in quarter finals that year and Dogs bowed out in semi finals).

Didnt take long for the Negative Nancy to rubbish another young player.
Since when has being factually correct with evidence been considered negative.

Show me his Youtube highlights reel like all good players should have.

No one is saying he is a gun. People are hopeful that he comes good when he’s in NRL.

And also, show me Josh Jackson’s highlights reel that all the good players have as you say

Cogger isn't winning them games, nor was Brock Lamb.

Meaney is a while off first grade and is being played out of necessity because they NEED to win games, and as such Watson and Pearce are the best halves combination to do so.

They only have 3 specialist fullbacks at the club: Cooper, Meaney and Ponga. Cooper isn't ready yet. The rest are wingers/centres who can play fullback. Even Tex Hoy can play fullback.

As I specifically stated, and you obviously decided to overlook, Meaney was picked because he is their ONLY option, not because he is their best option.

This is all assuming that Brown doesn't make a change and play RossDog (who is just back from a groin injury so fullback may stress him) at fullback and Meaney off the bench.

Come back Friday night and tell me how well you thought he went... because I damn sure will.
I didn't overlook anything, you just rabbit on about how many FB's they have lost since JC was their fullback and then wrap it up by saying they had no options. That is just bullshit and you know it. They have several options all of which involve experienced FG players who have played in the position, yet they still chose a completely untried kid in the position. Your view is that he is rubbish. The view of the coaching staff of 2 different clubs is that he is not. Even if for whatever reason he doesn't get a start the fact that he has been nominated for the position clearly indicates the club rates him, but like most things you go on about you will manage to find a negative associated with what the Dogs are doing and then trot out a mystical list of other players to back up a non existent argument. Just how the hell did Meaney make the top 30 at the knights if he is so bad? Were the coaching staff on a bender somewhere drawing names out of a hat? Don't forget he was in their top 30 before we signed him. How about you give the kid a chance before you nail him to the cross.

I think Ian Roberts was.
(I will stand corrected if I'm wrong)
Yeah Ian Roberts came out, think he even posed for a gay magazine. Marty Bella was always rumoured to be but who knows….or cares for that matter.

Why would Brown bring in a kid who according to some on here can't tackle, doesn't position himself properly and is a long way short of being a FG player? He must be the worst coach in the history of footy.....It's not like they don't have Watson there who can do the job.
Why not give the player and his currant coach a break and at least see how he goes before judging the young bloke?

blah blah blah
Tell you what.... lets go see what Nathan Brown (Knights coach) has to say.
"He's our next best player in that position and also stops us from moving the whole team around.
"If we move Connor and bring someone in, we have to move three people for one."
Hang on... Did I not just say that ?

THEY HAD NO OTHER OPTIONS AVAILABLE AT FULLBACK.
THE ONLY OPTIONS THEY HAD AT THE CLUB, ARE EITHER TOO YOUNG (Cooper), OR ALREADY NAMED TO PLAY FIRST GRADE!!

Nathan Brown obviously doesn't know what he is on about... because you know better.

How many clubs were battling for Meaney's signature? 1 ... US
Knights didn't even attempt to retain him.

The bottom line is our club got more desperate than a teenage girl 2 days before prom night without a date. They were happy to take anyone to plug the hole Mbye was going to leave, because if Mbye went and they DIDN'T secure another fullback, and it dragged on for too long, members would want their heads, and any faith in the current board would have been decimated.

They HAD to sign someone... that someone was Meaney.

Same applies to Cogger. People blew loads over Cogger and are starting to see he is an average signing as well.

Will Meaney come good, who knows, BUT at this stage in his career, he is no better than Brett Lane / Brent Crisp / Patrick Templeman (all hype and no action). That is what I am saying!!

This year Meaney has been horrible. Missing tackles and leading to several tries. Not getting involved in attack. I've already posted several highlights of his games this year highlighting it, and others agreed with my astute observations.

There is nothing to say otherwise.

Second of all, jave you actually watched a single full game of his? Or are you just wuoting stats after spending hours searching for them on the net?
Yes I have.. I watch a lot of NSW Cup. Stats PROVE what video shows. Over at the Knights forum most were rather "meh" about Meaney leaving as well, stating young Cooper (who I've mentioned already in this thread) was a better option.

How many games have you seen him play?

No one is saying he is a gun. People are hopeful that he comes good when he’s in NRL.

I'm just being realistic. Peoples expectations are way too high that he'll be starting fullback next year. Unless his defence improves dramatically, he doesn't stand a chance.

Bergamin is a better prospect, heck even Cerruto or Tom Carr is.

I have watched two Intrust games in which he played and he was ordinary, defence was bad HOWEVER others who have seen him play more often reckon he is far better than what he has shown since coming back from injury this year.
