New police powers to move on drunks

POLICE will be given the power to disperse people considered to be "noticeably drunk" under new laws to be introduced to parliament.
Police Minister Tony Kelly confirmed that people found to be slurring, and considered by police to be contemplating creating a nuisance, would be allowed to be moved on or fined.
"The government isn't about stopping people from having fun," he said.
"This is about making people responsible for their actions."
Police had already been allowed to move on drunks but Mr Kelly said the difference was the wording of the legislation.
People had to be "seriously affected" by alcohol previously whereas now they will only have to be "noticeably affected" with the discretion of what is noticeable left to police.
"Police have faced the dilemma over whether to disperse revellers in places such as train stations and shopping centres, and when groups gathered for 'beach coldie' parties," Mr Kelly said.
