I went out to a clients house 2 years ago. Surname was Rogerson, suburb was Padstow. Knowing that Rodger lived in Padstow and Knowing he was already in jail, my mind wandered slightly to his crimes. I knocked on the door and I kid you not, the bloke who answered was a splitting image of Rodger. Turns out that this WAS his Brother. He was a retired copper, and had eery sense of humour with a reptilian smile and wicked laugh. I get goosebumps thinking about it. As I walked out, I was honestly looking over my shoulder.

I worked for one of the big banks up at Kings Cross in the 70s.
CBA?
A mates father was branch manager there when it got held up at gunpoint in the 70’s. It really shook him up and years later he still struggled with it. No trauma counselling etc back then.

Bank of new South Wales, on the corner of Bourke and William Streets. I was assistant manager - wanted a break from international finance.

A mate of mine was also held up, over at Bondi Road. His was scary; but another workmate was killed when he was shot in the face, point blank with a shotgun at the Parramatta Westfield branch when he pursued a criminal who tried to break in. Guess I was lucky.

So the predecessor to Wales and then Westpac.
That’s terrible about the fella in Parramatta.
Bank robberies don’t really exist anymore due to better security and the lack of cash used. Now the scams are mostly online. Still about the money however.

cannot really think of any other Aussie crime TV shows other than "Underbelly", but there are a couple movies worth watching --> "Dirty Deeds", "Chopper", "Two Hands", "Gettin' Square" which is more comedic, "Animal Kingdom" (which was inspired by a real targeted killing of police officers in Melbourne) etc.

as for other organised crime TV shows outside of Australia, "The Sopranos", "Boardwalk Empire", "Peaky Blinders", "Breaking Bad" as a drug show set in New Mexico and Bryan Cranston is pretty f*+#ing incredible (only Gandolfini's Tony Soprano is better acting on TV IMO)... I really enjoyed the first couple seasons of "Sons of Anarchy" but it kind of lost me after that... I have recently got into "Narcos" and "Narcos: Mexico" and they are both very good

"Peaky Blinders" is as good as it gets and this is one of the greatest scenes ever shot for TV with two awesome actors in Cillian Murphy and Tom Hardy

I worked for one of the big banks up at Kings Cross in the 70s. All these characters had bank accounts, and some were happy to have a drink and a chat.

Back when there were no mobile phones to record conversations, they were far more candid with what they said, if they trusted you.
I met Roger Rogerson, and Abe Saffron; and they were pleasant enough if you weren't a threat or a dick head.
Rogerson could tell some funny stories about policing the illegal casinos and brothels.

Never actually conversed with Neddy Smith; he was pretty quiet and oozed an aura of danger (he would have been perfect for the role in Wolf Creek).

Abe was just a pleasant guy who treated people as equals. He gave me a pair of hand made Karandonis boots for Christmas.
With Roger you could never be certain that he wouldn't just suddenly turn on you.

Working at the Cross was quite an education.

The guy they were all frightened of was a shadowy character simply known as "Big Bad". He was a Clark Kent type, who never socialised, had no police profile, and was the hit man of choice, because he did a clean job and left no clues. One of Abe's guys told me about him. He said Big Bad once did a contract job for the Mafia in California - someone "fell" under a bus. He said you would walk past him in the street and not look twice, apart from the fact that he was powerfully built, and drove an old FJ Holden. He is still an unknown character to this day.
I really enjoyed reading your story along with the others regarding those old time gangsters.
In my earlier years back in the eighties there was a night club which wasn’t main stream but popular on Oxford st called Patto’s / Ingognito
It was owned by Abe, I used to love it after hanging out around Bondi junction.
Found out years later what was actually being traded and some crazy stories.
Does this jog anyone’s memory.

I worked at that branch early 80's ....what an eye opener. The ladies of the night used to hang around out front soliciting customers at the ATM and they were one of the first branches to have panels of resistant glass across the customer service counter to stop clients spitting or trying to punch staff.......and as a hold up deterrent.
They were replaced in some branches by the BRB which were bullet resistant steel panels raised by compressed air in just over half a second which gave full protection from floor to counter level with the press of a button.

Never involved in a hold up there but at a suburban branch in the late eighties..pretty scary stuff and it was like it was in slow motion and really loud. Never forget the sound of the sawn off butt being smashed into the counter and the shouting to get everyone's attention....

No. Doesn't ring a bell with me.

As I recall, Abe appeared to be a silent partner with Harry M Miller, as they were often seen together- also a fellow called Keith Wong from an import export company, Transworld Agencies. Transworld was big in the Chinese community. I suspect a bit of money went via their companies.

Pablo Escobar on Netflix - 74 episodes about a drug lord who murdered thousands, including senior politicians, military and police chiefs, hundreds of police officers, and many civilians. True story.

Outside of the teev and if you like pods - there’s a good Podcast called ‘Life and Crimes’ by Andrew Rule, who is one half of the team that wrote the books called Leadbelly, which is what Underbelly was based on. Interesting stories about mostly older crooks / crimes and a new ep usually drops every Saturday.

For other good stories, The Australian had a couple of crackers in ‘The Teachers Pet’, though I think that’s currently unavailable because the interest it created got a guy charged with the murder of his wife which is now before the courts. ‘Who The Hell Is Hamish’ was another good one about a conman who left a trail of destruction in his wake. I’ve also been listening to ‘Twisted Minds’ more recently which is pretty decent.
