Is this the last of the old school Sydney crooks who ran the city. I no little about him, other than reading books etc. If half was true wow. Wondering if anyone knows someone or has any insight into the life of this feared crook.

good riddance

EDIT: that said, the mini-series "Blue Murder" starring Tony Martin as Neddy Smith and Richard Roxburgh as Roger Rogerson is worth a watch
That was banned in NSW when it was released. I think it is one of the better tv mini-series that's been made in this country. Whilst I'm sure they took a few liberties, most of it is widely believed to be very accurate. Both Martin and Roxburgh were amazing. Funnily enough, Tony Martin played a Sydney detective in Wildside not long after this.

Apparently smith was fuming Martin played him. As smith was 6 foot 6 and Martin quite short.....

a bit like the injunctions taken out in Victoria in the lead up to the release of the first season of "Underbelly" --> eg. Alex Dimitriades' character not being named and simply referred to as "the runner"

I wonder if any new stories or info comes out now. That seems to generally happen whenever these characters pop off. The difficulty is separating fact from fiction.

Yep the original was made in 1995 but not allowed to be shown in NSW until 2001 due to ongoing legal action - same as the first Underbelly was originally banned in Victoria. The original is very good, the sequel was pretty disappointing although Roxburgh is always good and nailed Rogerson, even as an old man with his limp up to the Jamie Gao killing in 2014.

As for Neddy, he was a deadset lunatic.
Hard as nails, take no prisoners, live by the sword.
I guess that’s why he spent half his life behind bars.
Was smart enough to live to 76 though when many of his fellow crooks died a lot younger.

True but like Ivan Milat it seems Neddy took secrets to the grave. Rogerson can’t speak out these days either.

Not sure how true it is , but heard it from a few staff ,when we used to play at the iron duke in Sydney got taken down a few times to where the kegs are stored and was told a few stories about how neddy used to to conduct buisness down there and pointed out what could of possibly been bullet holes, yet again I'm not sure if it were true but was a pretty good story

An old neighbour of mine when he was a young chap used to run with a crew involved with Neddy. He ended up doing time in prison with Neddy after being done for knocking off a armored van. Never really spoke much about that era, think he was distancing himself from all that after getting out of prison and starting fresh. He did say though that Neddy was crazy, not in loony but just his cold bloodiness and fear he could put in people. Even in prison, my neighbour said Neddy was feared by many inside.

I watched a pod cast a while back with Abo Henry. Thing went for ages, he sounded like more of a lunatic then Neddy was. A smarter version and followed strict old school values

Fascinating characters indeed , that whole era and yes we don't condone violence etc but most of the shows depicting the crooked fuckers were pretty bloody good lets be honest.I was always fascinated by hitman Flannery who disappeared off the face of the earth, surely Rogerson and or Smith both know exactly what happened to him..and while like isn't the right word for a crooked copper, as he was a Georges Hall fella and even lived In Condell Park literally streets away from me i found Rogerson intriguing..bent as hell but yep intriguing an anti hero even maybe just i think like that lol

Agree DD Roxburgh played Rogerson fantastically, indeed he is a terriffic actor all round(Rake he stars in on the ABC is a ripping show very funny/witty)
Absolutely too Martin playing Neddy was ridiculous in terms of stature but the show itself was still alright.

Called abo thought he was Spanish finds out he is aboriginal.
Asked how he felt about the nickname Abo after learning he was Aboriginal, Henry said his Koori friends had always thought it was funny and he couldn't change it.

'It's a bit late in life now,' he said. 'I don't give a f***.'

Lol that made me laugh I've been known as wog for over 20 years only ever had 2 problems with it ,once playing soccer I called wogs ball and this dude went apeshit called me a racist, I said well yeah you probably right but wogs my name and I called the ball you Muppet even the reff laughed and told the dude to chill, and once in a pub getting up a mate said you're shout wog and some lady decided to say her piece about how racist it is I dont think she liked out reply

I worked for one of the big banks up at Kings Cross in the 70s. All these characters had bank accounts, and some were happy to have a drink and a chat.

Back when there were no mobile phones to record conversations, they were far more candid with what they said, if they trusted you.
I met Roger Rogerson, and Abe Saffron; and they were pleasant enough if you weren't a threat or a dick head.
Rogerson could tell some funny stories about policing the illegal casinos and brothels.

Never actually conversed with Neddy Smith; he was pretty quiet and oozed an aura of danger (he would have been perfect for the role in Wolf Creek).

Abe was just a pleasant guy who treated people as equals. He gave me a pair of hand made Karandonis boots for Christmas.
With Roger you could never be certain that he wouldn't just suddenly turn on you.

Working at the Cross was quite an education.

The guy they were all frightened of was a shadowy character simply known as "Big Bad". He was a Clark Kent type, who never socialised, had no police profile, and was the hit man of choice, because he did a clean job and left no clues. One of Abe's guys told me about him. He said Big Bad once did a contract job for the Mafia in California - someone "fell" under a bus. He said you would walk past him in the street and not look twice, apart from the fact that he was powerfully built, and drove an old FJ Holden. He is still an unknown character to this day.

You’ve certainly lived a very interesting life Chris.

I’ve met Roger quite a few times but didn’t meet Neddy in person. I know he wasn’t very popular with my mates in jail, both screws and crims. He personally was a grub and a dog but many of the old school crooks could teach a lot to the pussies who think doing a drive by shooting to a family home at 3am is tough

The old characters selected their targets and made sure no innocent people were harmed. These days they just spray bullets all over the place without care.

I only know what I know about this guy from TV internet and books but he sounded like a grub. Roger use to drink up Revesby Pub and one day tried to start a blue with my old man and I guess I. I was like 19 and Roger was hobbling around like and old bloody idiot. Nothing happened as everyone ended up having level heads but what an arrogant dickhead
