News Multiple people stabbed in Sydney CBD

Multiple people have reportedly been stabbed in Sydney's CBD by a man wearing a balaclava.

Police on the scene at King Street and Clarence Street have advised people to avoid the area.

"There is a police operation that is ongoing in CBD," a police spokesperson said.

Emergency services are responding and treating multiple patients.

Witnesses reported seeing multiple police cars and ambulances arriving on the scene.

"Cops cars, ambos, cop bikes all converging on York St. I’ve even seen three undercover cop cars pull up and blokes running from them down the street," Ben Kimber wrote on Twitter.

Police make first statement about the incident


Police have confirmed a man is in custody after allegedly stabbing a woman in Sydney’s CBD this afternoon.

"About 2pm, emergency services responded following reports a man was walking along York Street, Sydney, armed with a knife," they said in a statement.

"As police made their way to the location, there were multiple reports the man had stabbed someone near the corner of King and Clarence Streets.

"Police and NSW Ambulance paramedics located a woman inside a hotel, who had a stab wound. She has been taken to hospital in a stable condition.

"A short time later, members of the public detained the man before police attended and arrested him.

"He has since been taken to Day Street Police Station."

Officers from Sydney City Police Area Command and various specialist police are still conducting proactive patrols the area, but police say they believe there is no further threat to public safety.

A number of crime scenes have been established and a number of road closures are in place.

This is having a significant impact on traffic and public transport. Members of the public are urged to avoid the area.

Investigation in 'infancy', motive unknown


Superintendent Gavin Wood said police were not yet sure of the reason for the attack.

"We don't know causation or rationale," he said. "It would appear unprovoked at this stage but we are keeping an open mind going forward."

He said police were aware of reports the man had shouted "Allahu Akbar" but could not confirm if they were true.

"We are in the infancy stage," he said. "There are a number of crime scenes... The investigation is ongoing."
