Movie Discussion

Whats the best war movie at the moment?

Black Hawk Down and Saving Private Ryan are still the best, nothing newer comes close.
Did you not like Hacksaw Ridge or Unbroken. ? An oldie but a goodie The Fighting Sullivans a true story regarding the death of ALL five sons of a family aboard a naval ship in WW11. Congress enacted the Sullivan rule which specified no immediate family members could serve together to prevent this happening again. A bit like the Private Ryan situation. As a parent how heartbreaking would it be to receive a visit to say all your sons had been killed serving their country.

Watched Micky 17

It didn't do well in the reviews and I was hoping it was just critics giving it a bad wrap as they expect more from Bong Joon Ho, but it's really just not a good movie at all.

There's some good things about it. Robert Patterson's performance is decent especially when he's playing off two personalities against each other. And Mark Ruffalo's character is entertaining. He's basically a play on ultra conservative southern Republican politicians.

Beyond that, not much going for it. The story is kind of average. It's trying to address several different ethical dilemmas (ethics of cloning, colonisation, dehumanisation), but it kind of brushes over them and smothers them with pointless side plots. Often it feels like they start telling a side story then think "this is boring", then just cut the rest of that side story out. And it really doesn't take itself serious enough to care much about the subject matter.

Only watch it if you're bored and have nothing else to watch.

I was actually contemplating watching it. I have it on my watch list waiting for a rainy day. Was it really that bad?

Watched two decent horror movies recently:

Talk to Me

Aussie horror flick. It has been strongly praised by many. I didn't think it was as good as people made out, but still a good classic horror movie with some excellent performances from a relatively unknown cast (other than Miranda Otto who is a support character)

Recommend it for any horror fans. Just don't go in with too high expectations.

Smile 2

The first Smile movie I thought was good without being great. It was an entertaining movie with some chill factor.

This movie started as a mixed bag. It was slow at the start. After the first 30 minutes I turned it off and told myself that it's just a repeat of the first movie and I don't have the effort for it. But eventually I went back and watched it more, and I'm glad I did. A lot of the movie is derivative of other horror movies, but it has some genuine spine chilling moments. Parts that literally felt like someone just ran ice down my back.

Highly recommend for any horror fans

Watched the trailer for this and have it on my watch list. Freaky smile. A Donald smile.

I got back from watching 28 years later tonight. I went into it without reading too much about it. I saw that it had some mixed reviews. And I'll say that I thought it was a pretty good extention of the series.

Overall it's a good story with some big leaps in logic. If I have a criticism of it, it seems like the end of the movie was solely intended to set up the next movie which annoyed me a bit.
Thank you for that. I don’t get to the movies much , normally wait until they come to streaming and I am keen to see this one. I enjoyed the first movie better than the second.

I think this series does brooding horror quite well while the horror genre these days often focuses a bit on building towards jump scares. I'd probably say this has been influenced a bit by the walking dead tv series.

Whats the best war movie at the moment?

Bit if an older series now. But I enjoyed the 'Band of brothers' series a lot. Fairly gritty with stories that draw you in. Well worth the watch if you haven't seen them.

Seen Hacksaw and the one with Mel Gibson about Vietnam but nothing for me comes close to the ones I mentioned.

Don’t get me wrong. I loved SPR. Some movies are more hardcore than others so they resonate in different ways. Of course the older the movie the less sophisticated the story telling and effects but that doesn’t necessarily mean it is inferior. It’s like westerns, I don’t like them all but am open minded.

Yeah. The Pacific was another one. That wove war legend into the story( Basilone) with a wee bit of poetic licence.

I'll have to look that up. I don't think I've seen it.

I go back into the old war movies a lot Guns of Navarone is a fav

Gladiator 2 should have been called “Gladiator, Temus revenge”

They're the same basic recipe in my opinion. Revenge pie that ends up being noble goal roast by the end. I still prefer the original. But if you break it down, #2 has very similar initial motivations for the main character. And the hero in both movies have the same end goals too. They take slightly different paths to get to similar end points. But overall those paths aren't so different at all.

They probably aren't that far apart in terms of quality IMO. I think that nostalgia might have built a pedestal for the original movie. And because they're quite similar overall, expectation leaves people feeling a bit let down. They've even got the hero of the second one adopting the same accent by the end. So I think the producers even called upon some of the Nostalgia to pull people into the movie.

Feels very copy and paste which isn't a issue, its the quality of it all that is, especially when coming from the 1st one.

When I heard they were remaking this, I didn't expected it to be absolute trash. Think I was wrong though. This actually looks really good.
