Good to see NSW might be getting a premier with a difficult to spell name. It took me a while to learn to spell/pronounce Annastacia Palaszczuk.

I'm having a chuckle at some of my FB friends acting as if it was their social media campaigning against the lockouts that got rid of him. One even mentioned Kings Cross can hopefully return to its former glory. I replied that the only "glory" connected with the cross was when you put "hole" after it (I dont think he as impressed).

Betoota Advocate has covered this topic:

Bondi Nightclub Promoter Certain He Had Something To Do With Baird’s Resignation
CONTACT

NSW Premier Mike Baird has today declared that he is retiring from politics.

Mr Baird made the announcement this morning that it was time for him to to come good as a Liberal State Premier and not finish the full term he was elected for.

“Serving as premier of NSW has been a tremendous honour, but I have made clear from the beginning that I was in politics to make a difference, and then move on. After 10 years in public life, this moment for me has arrived,” he said in a statement.

However, on the other side of Sydney, away from Baird’s comfortable Manly electoral office, in another beach front suburb – with very similar demographics and socio-economics – Bondi nightclub promoter, Raj McConelly (29) is celebrating the revolution.

“We did it guys” he says to his six housemates.

“This is a true sign of the power held by Sydney’s youth”

Like many other ex-private schoolers who are waiting for their grandparents fortune, Raj has been campaigning, three to four times a fortnight, on social media, to bring an end to the Baird Government’s ‘archaic’ lock out laws.

“Gentrification is killing this city” he says while stirring his $7 almond milk half-caf.

“These laws have all but killed a night economy. We couldn’t stay silent any longer”.

With Baird’s resignation to be effective from next week, it is believed that Raj is not the only one who will be taking credit for the most recent resignation of a NSW Premier.

Orange-based greyhound trainer, Keith Bruce (55), says that ‘Baird flew too close to the sun’.

“He pissed off the wrong people!” he roars.

“We mightn’t look like much. Sure, most of us look like two-bit criminals. But we have a voice and we were heard”

Meanwhile, in Coffs Harbour, an unofficial environmentalist by the name of Banjo Clementé also believes he is responsible for Baird’s resignation.

“The shark nets were a step too far”

“He’s a dictator. I’m glad to see the back of him”.

It is not yet known how many 55-year-old Greens voters from Sydney’s Inner-West are claiming the resignation as a win for their anti-WestConnex community action group.

MORE TO COME.
Lol.

The worst thing he did was give away NSW train building jobs to overseas, not to mention shut the Newcastle train line without a tram ready to go, not to mention give corrupt cops a license to kill and we'll sweep it under the carpet, are you telling me NSW is happy place?

Become the Premier.

He has been a disaster for quite some time, if he was the Premier when the next election was held, it would have been a landslide to the Labor Party.

Ahhh fuck... knew there would be a good reason..

3 family health issues.

Father - Open Heart Surgery over Christmas and full time carer for his mother.
Mother - Muscular Dystrophy
Sister - Previously had breast cancer that went into remission, but has now come back.

So he's resigning to spend as much time with them as he can.

She's not too bad a candidate.. but I think she is best "in the background" working her portfolio.

I don't think she has what it takes to lead the state.

Other possiblities are:
Rob Stokes
Andrew Constance

Both would look after country NSW as well.
I'd prefer Gladys. She's 46 but looks like she's in her 60s lol.

With Sydney finally dead, Mike Baird's work is done

Let's look at the legacy of the premier who bravely stood up to the weak and made the state safe for mining, property development, and casinos. Especially casinos.

  • Andrew P Street
All over Sydney people are hard at work today.

That's because the long-rumoured surprise resignation of NSW Premier Mike Baird on Thursday means that they'll need to rapidly change the Baird/bad slogans on their protest signs ahead of Saturday night's Keep Sydney Open rally – and given that his most likely replacement is Gladys Berejiklian, this is going to require some seriously inspired pun-work.

While the personal circumstances surrounding Baird's resignation are understandable – and here's genuinely and sincerely hoping that his father, mother and sister's health battles are brief and successful – it's important to keep a clear eye on what Mike Baird's legacy has been for NSW generally and Sydney specifically. Because they have been huge.

Sure, Baird is hardly the only conservative politician to see no problem with being a committed Christian while doing things like closing women's shelters, reneging on promises for domestic violence funding support services for the Family Court, and turfing pensioners out of public housing – even though they are things with which Jesus would, perhaps, not be entirely down.
Speaking of democracy and transparency, after trumpeting the success that the Independent Commission Against Corruption had done in bringing down Labor's Joe Tripodi it rather inconveniently started implicating current and former Liberal figures. This was Operation Spicer, whose investigation into the freewheeling operations of Sydney Water Holdings drawing federal Senator Arthur Sinodinos into a scandal involving illegal donations to the NSW Liberal Party, although nobody is accusing Sinodinos of corruption.

So faced with this ongoing problem, Baird ensured that ICAC was rendered toothless in late 2016 (with Labor's gutless help, it should be pointed out), by abolishing the position of commissioner Megan Latham, forcing her to reapply for her job, and adding a new three-commissioner model which effectively means ICAC can only investigate matters of which the state government approves. Problem solved!

And of course there is the ongoing triumph that is WestConnex – the brilliant plan to funnel all the city-bound traffic of the western suburbs onto the single lane of Newtown's King Street – which has been characterised by cost overruns, disputes over the practicality of the design, and scandals over undervaluation of compulsory property acquisitions leaving homeowners unable to afford to buy elsewhere.

Of course, this would have been more difficult if local councils had been around to fight it – so democracy was streamlined nicely with the forced merger of three of the most troublesome councils into the new Inner West Council, which is still being overseen by an administrator rather than one of those annoying elected mayors. And said administrator, by a remarkable coincidence, just happens to be Richard Pearson, formerly of the NSW Department of Planning, which oversaw the WestConnex development. Why, what are the odds?

But perhaps the greatest legacy of Baird's storied rule was how he took one of the planet's most vibrant late night cities and turned it into a ghost town.

The Lockout Laws – which affected all the pubs, bars and music venues of the CBD, Darlinghurst, Kings Cross but mysteriously stopped just across the road from the Barangaroo casino – made entire industries economically unviable at a stroke, killing Oxford Street, closing down venues, and doing likely irreparable damage to Sydney's rich legacy as a hotbed of live music.

The claims that the lockouts were necessary because of the level of drunken violence on the streets seemed fair enough, at least until one noticed that the Star City Casino in Pyrmont, outside the lockout zone, had a rich history of the high levels of underreported violence yet remained mysteriously lockout-free.

So thank you, Casino Mike.

Thank you for taking Australia's global city and turning it into a suburb that closes when the sun sets. Thank you for ensuring that the profiteering of the property development classes aren't undercut by annoying poor people. Thank you for protecting rapacious mining companies from the predations of communities trying to protect their water. And thank you for ensuring that a generation of creative young Sydneysiders move to Melbourne instead.

So enjoy your free time, Mike. Kick back. Relax. Maybe catch some greyhound racing. After all, you've earned it.

I heard he resigned because he's just managed to sell his office. It's been a hard slog but he's finally sold off everything that there was a market for.

Hard to justify giving the job to an Australian manufacturer for 4X The cost and still getting them late ?
Maybe if they'd work for less than $1000 an hour, 50% super and take less than 40 weeks annual leave they'd land more work ?

hit the nail on the head.

Mate forget the bludgers in the government departments (I dont mean you, lol), but i have worked for 4 different private companies and 2 government organisations and I am just amazed how much time people waste every where and do so little work compare to 3rd world countries for example india.

People here work 7.5/8 hours a day max... in india 12 hours a day is the norm
People here work 5 days a week , people in india work 6 days a week.
People here get over time for working after hours and get huge penalty rates for public holidays, christmas , new year etc...in india they would be happy to just get paid for working extra hours.

and the worst thing is last 15 days of December and first 15 days of January there is absolutely no work at all.

Fuck , i forgot to mention how many able bodies are here who do not even work and live off tax payers money.

He can stick his google garbage, there is no such law anyway and his Government spending 17million on renaming City Rail with new stickers was economically reckless when Health and Education are always screaming for assistance.
The big picture comes first, good bye cold prick.

His father just had heart surgery.
His mother has terminal motor neuron disease.
And his sister was in remission from breast cancer, but it's come back and is said to be terminal.

He retired to spend what little time they have left with them.
Fuck!

Well he is a better man than I give him credit for. A great family man and I wish his whole family the best.
