The new Brisbane coach has abolished a rewards system that would have seen Broncos players given extra time off for hitting fitness benchmarks.

It’s understood Brisbane’s full-time squad, including Reece Walsh, Adam Reynolds, Selwyn Cobbo, Pat Carrigan, Kotoni Staggs and Payne Haas, stood to receive another week of annual leave if they reported for pre-season in good shape.

But Maguire has no interest in cheap holidays. The premiership mentor believes reporting for pre-season not overweight should be a basic requirement for a professional NRL player.

I think Walters probably tried the carrot and stick method of getting them motivated based on this article. Madge is just dropping the carrot from the equation. And given the players seem to have white anted Walters, they'll probably try to do the same to Madge when they realise they're not going to get coddled. And they've just received their first indication that there's expectation that they take accountability.

Whether his approach works will depend on how much the board get behind him through the year. If their better players start asking for releases early on I dare say the board will be giving Madge permission to negotiate.
