Australian opener Matthew Hayden was tonight hauled before a Cricket Australia code of conduct hearing after being charged with making a "detrimental public comment" about Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh.

Hayden faced the hearing tonight as a result of calling Harbhajan a "little obnoxious weed" in an interview on Brisbane radio yesterday, a comment that caused a wave of consternation among Indian cricket followers today.

The hearing began at CA's Jolimont headquarters in Melbourne about 8pm, and is being presided over by code of conduct commissioner Ron Beazley.

Unlike verbal barbs directed on the field - an ICC portfolio - Hayden's decision to air his views in a radio interview, which was picked up and run with by national newspapers this morning, left him open to sanction by CA.

The charge falls under Rule 9 of the CA Code of Behaviour, which prohibits "detrimental public comment".

"Rule guidelines prohibit public denigration of other players against whom they have or will play," CA public affairs manager Peter Young said.

Hayden's hearing late today must have occurred at least partly because of Indian reaction to his comment.

The Indian cricket board (BCCI) were less than impressed with Hayden's remarks and lodged a protest with CA.

"We condemn such comments by the Australian players," Indian board's chief administrative officer Ratnakar Shetty told Reuters.

"Our secretary has already communicated our feelings to Cricket Australia.

"We've advised our players to show restraint, but despite that if such comments are being made it is really unfair.

"CA have said they will look into this and let us hope there is some communication on this."

The Indian team manager Bimal Soni said the players did not want to publicly respond to Hayden's comments.

"We want to play cricket... with what Hayden said, our stance is vindicated," Soni said.

"This sort of thing should not happen but we've decided to take it in our stride and want to get on with preparing for the finals."

Harbhajan himself offered no comment when asked about Hayden's words at Sydney airport today
Was announced on the news that he was sacked after the hearing, what a joke

How has he been sacked? Haven't heard that yet. Tbh you look at league and the players and coaches can say whatever they want to eachother and the ref's in press conferences but in sports like AFL and cricket they get pulled up or fined 20 grand.

I ttly agree that harby is an obnoxious pest, he's a character and it's good for the game but turn it up, as if he defamed him he just stated his opinion, I mean it's the same as just saying "he's a little brat"

ffs

Dopes...u would think cricket australia would defend their players, like the indian cricket do for their own.

Indian players would excape murder charges in their own country.
