Sure, they don't, but recent history tells us teams aren't winning shit without a halfback steering the team around and clubs will pay through the nose when they think they have one and that's why you end up with players like Brooks pushing near a mill a season. Roosters even sent out a busted Cronk in a final just because having his voice on the field was more valuable than a fully fit player. Average salary for a top 5 halfback is around $1.1m while the top 5 5/8's is around 750k, Storm have also offered Munster a reduced wage now that they've got Hughes and Paps locked in so that also follows the trend. If a club is going to be offering Burton near a mill a season then chances are they're some dead end club that isn't going to feature in the finals anyway,
You can pay Burton big money and still get a serviceable halfback for much less than what Burton is re-signed for that can help out with kicking and engage defenders better than Flanagan can. We don't need two star halves.

Gus will sort the right $$$ there isn't any rush but when do we think it will be finalised, in a month? 2? Bit longer than that..?
Fucken media could get painful and flog this story to death regularly no doubt my advice to any worriers is ignore all their bullshit, they know fuckall.
Does anyone remember before Burton even played a game for us, Gustav said basically we've signed him for unders and we will upgrade his contract because we know he's worth more??

So Hughes is on $900k and Munster is on $1.1m which is an average of $1m for Melbourne's 2 halves, and they don't seem to be going too bad.

More to the point in a $10m Salary Cap does $100k more or less for a 1/2 or 5/8 really make that much difference, that's 1%, somehow I don't think so.

If we offer 800 hes gone! , he will be our first million dollar player.
We are bombarded with stories about this player getting x dollars and that player getting y dollars. We never know for certain what anybody gets, but all of the scuttlebutt over the last five years has had Kieran Foran being paid a million dollars per season to play for the Dogs. If this was true then a million per season for Burton looks like a pretty smoky deal for the club.

With Keary 1 or 2 concussions away from retirement,it wouldn't be a surprise if the rortsters are courting him. And if the dulphins don't sign a marquee half, they will be too

It says "reportedly".

That's journo speak for "we are putting this guess out there".

Why would he even be considering a 2024 option in 2022 anyway?

If he wanted out he wouldn’t notify the club so early. He didn’t have to till next year. It was an obvious call from the club to notify him not to so they can negotiate new terms. Don’t be surprised if a new deal is done before the end of the season cause if I was gus I’d be throwing 900-1m a year for 5 years for him and build the team around him. Not many 6s in the comp who are even close to Burton’s ability and it’s his first full year in the halves in grade. I’m sure with Gus around it’ll all turn out Mickey Mouse

100% bro.

By us telling him not to take the option and go for a big contract shows duty of care to him, another reason for him not to leave.
We were hoping that he outplayed his contract. If he was taking his option then this meant he went poorly. So glad it didn’t come to that.

From my sponsor source...

He Was told to not take up the option in 2024 BY US and we will offer him a 5 year contract.

This Is Gus just looking after our most valuable player.
which would not only secure Burton's services long term but also play well with him that 6 months into his 2(+1) year deal we are already in effect planning a large pay rise for him for the third option year and are already locked in with him as our long term playmaker

November is 5 months away, of course he's looking at 2024 now.

At this stage in his career he is ahead of what brad Fittler was doing after a few years tbh. You cannot underestimate his ability
