Maroons carrying on 'like idiots'
Adrian Proszenko | June 20, 2009

QUEENSLAND State of Origin players and officials have been accused of being "falling over" drunk during a boozy bonding session on the Central Coast.

In rugby league's latest alcohol-fuelled incident, members of the Maroons camp allegedly urinated in the street after being moved on from the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Terrigal. Police were called but no charges were laid.

A witness told the Herald that Maroons officials were among those worst behaved, with hotel staff forced to close the Florida Beach Bar early because several Queenslanders were too intoxicated to be served.

"They were at the premises for a good three or four hours," a witness, who didn't want to be named, told the Herald.

"Some of the [team] management, some well-known names, were carrying on like idiots.

"They were ripping down promotional material from the roof. They also used offensive language and three or four of them were refused at the bar.

"They were falling over drunk. The bars were closed to get rid of them."

After leaving just before 1am, the Maroons congregated on the street while waiting for taxis.

"There were urinating on the street," the witness said.

The Crowne Plaza, which is set to host a Maroons dinner tonight, refused to comment.

Bar staff were not permitted to talk about the incident. A bar employee said he had heard of an incident but was not there.

After leaving the Crowne Plaza, some of the squad are believed to have travelled to a Gosford nightclub where they continued partying well into Friday morning. They eventually returned to the team hotel, the Star of the Sea Terrigal.

The police issued a statement: "Police have reviewed CCTV footage … and have been unable to establish any validity to claims of anti-social behaviour."

The Queensland team manager, Steve Walters, denied police were called and that any player or official urinated in the street.

Asked if the players or officials misbehaved, Walters said: "They were good".

Any article with a title like that, but ends in "The police issued a statement: Police have reviewed CCTV footage … and have been unable to establish any validity to claims of anti-social behaviour." is rubbish. What a waste of time reading it.
