it's complicated when it comes to Michael Jordan... the NBA in the 1970's was competitive and there were some great players (eg. Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Oscar Robertson, Jerry West, Elvin Hayes, an older Wilt Chamberlain etc.) but it wasn't popular... playoff games were not even shown live
but then came a united league with the ABA merger, and a great new generation of players in the 1980's with Magic Johnson and his Lakers and Larry Bird's Celtics dominating the decade and saving the league... great teams, great players, dynasties, great playoff games etc.
and since the rest of the world started catching up to the US (ie. Croatia, Russia, Serbia, Lithuania etc.), the NBA decided to send a fully fledged NBA, star studded roster for the 1992 Olympics... the Dream Team... and its best player was a recent two time champion, Michael Jordan... and if Magic & Bird saved the NBA, Jordan made it global
Jordan was that famous, that in demand, it is hard to comprehend now... but I think this one fact shows just how big Jordan was --> in the finals vs the Jazz in his last season with the Bulls, games had 30+ million TV viewers... 25 years later with a comparable player in terms of greatness competing (ie. LeBron James), viewership was less than 10 million for every finals games and there are plenty more people living in the USA now
Jordan was a well cultivated, media savvy pop culture phenomenon - Nike's became cool, the jumpman Air Jordan logo, the movies, 'Be like Mike', the sponsorships, the Michael Jackson song 'Jam' etc... 'The Last Dance' is just the latest piece in the Jordan image -->
the Chicago Bulls prior to the drafting of Jordan were thrown under the bus... literally referred to as the "Travelling Chicago Cocaine Circus"... his ex-wife barely mentioned (if at all)... his kids are barely mentioned... his gambling glossed over as simply his competitive drive... his bullying of Toni Kukoč a response to his GM's behaviour and nothing personal at Kukoč... Isiah Thomas is an a*+#hole and disassociates himself from Thomas being left off the Dream Team... that he did not have an option to come back for the 1999 season and defend their crown etc.
in view of the above, Luc Longley does not matter to American crowds
