You're not using planes for forward deployment unless its a very specific circumstance, they get dropped by parachute so if they get snagged, its death. You can rappel off a chopper and evacuated much easier.Yeah the expanded contract (next 10 years) from last year now makes it 11 aircraft of different sizes and uses including fixed and rotary. The B737 tanker is more about that it can hold 72 people as well as the retardant, so it helps with forward deployment as situations begin to escalate. Chinook definitely more flexible in terms of quick access to water but as you say more concentrated drops so both have pros/cons.
Planes make great PR. Really big and you think they can drop heaps. They cannot though when you add it up over a day.
Don't get me wrong, during a fire PR is important. Worst thing that can happen is people start panicking and doing stupid shit. Reckon we have the balance not far off right here.
