Can anyone honestly say he’s even improved that much? He’s playing very similar to how he was under Baz just has a lot better stuff around him

It’s all relative. If everyone’s performance has increased 50% since Potter took over and Flanno is only playing 15% better then he’s still a fair way behind

0 kicks last week for a 7….

Hell yes, playing way better, more like what he can. Still no where near what he is capable of, but he's making progress in pretty much every facet of his game.

Take you biased glasses off, he is playing better, with a much higher level of confidence and the players around him are benefitting from that.

I don't believe that everyone is playing 50% better, not even remotely close. More like 10% and Flanagan is in line with that.

He didn't need to kick last game, maybe the coaching staff have told him not to kick unless it is a golden opportunity. In the Tiger's game the opportunities presented themselves and he made 4 quality kicks, 2 bombs, 1 grubber and 1 cross field, 0 went dead and 1 created a line drop out. Not great, but he isn't our #1 kicker, so more than serviceable.

It's pretty farkin obvious that Potter has him playing simple football (like the rest of the team), nothing complicated to confuse them, just back up your teammates (and Flanagan is one of the best backer uppers) and trust the players around you both in attack and defence (and Flanagan's defence is exemplary).

He’s doing what he’s told and given a very small role in the squad and he’s doing it adequately.

The problem is while you can have average players in the forwards and backs so long as you have other stars to make up the shortfall you cannot have a spine player in that role. Flanagan being a confidence player is made all the worst given that in a finals or GF scenario the pressure to perform will far exceed a regular season game and there will be moments where your confidence gets dented.

His defence though is his strongest trait although it’s a real shame Barrett has fucked BBOs development by giving him 10 minutes of game time for the first half of the season

Slight observation I’ve made about Kyle is it seems as if his rebuilding his game from the basics and not trying to rush things. His overall decision making and general play has improved, although it’s baby steps wouldn’t mind seeing him get a bit more ball to assess where his actually at. Ignoring all prior criticism of Kyle and viewing his game openly based of the last few weeks if we can’t bring a halfback for 23 he may be the best option. I get the vibe he’s entirely a confidence player, we’re winning games now and competing the full 80 and his getting game time now finally. Who knows could end up shaping into a good half with the right coaching and good players beside him next year.
He has been trained as a robot all of his career. I guess you can't change that over night.

Our goal for the rest of the season should be to tighten up the defence.
Obviously outscoring your opponent is the goal but we’re scoring 26ppg with Flano playing the role he currently plays. 26 points should be enough to win any game, so complaining about his lack of attack/spark doesn’t make any sense. Could we score more points with a more creative half? Sure. But the truth is, if our defence improves we’ll win most games anyway without paying 800k+ for a player that “takes the line on”.

Yeah, you are right I had a quick squiz basically 26 ppg letting in average of 24 per game (under Potter) which isn’t good

Opposition teams have scored 30 or more 4/8 games he’s been in charge but first 3 games cut him some slack (since the Panthers game only Souffs put 30’plus on us) more importantly since the Panthers game we have scored over 30 three times including last week

To put into perspective Baz had a single game over 30 points in his whole tenure in charge

It makes complete sense because we're currently playing pressure free football, pressure free to the point where Jake felt comfortable enough to try a chip and chase on a kick return against top 4 opposition lol. This style of play just isn't sustainable over an entire season, it's a good starting point and definitely something we can incorporate into our game moving forward but if we want to be a genuine top 8 team we're going to need to be better.

Sharks are probably a good example, although they offload and move the ball around a lot to create space they can still construct points through their ballplayers engaging the defence and creating space on the outside and it's why they've scored so many tries through their wingers this season. Flanagan just rarely does that and it's why we construct fuck all down our right side because Flanagan being the first point of attack just doesn't engage the line enough to generate space for the outside men to work with. The Kiraz no try was probably one of the first times all season so that's at least a postive sign.

Flanagan is playing better but he is not being asked to do too much --> a second kicking option, a link player, game in defence, effort

I definitely see what you’re saying. You’re 100% correct about pressure free football. It’s awesome to watch. Everyone playing as if they have nothing to lose. And to @KiwiDog7’s point that single 30+ point game was in the last round last year against the tigpies when the wooden spoon was locked up for us, hence pressure free football. I just feel like that may well be the way we play in the immediate future. Our own brand of footy. And Flano does a well enough job for that style of play. I also believe that style of play best suits our current group of players. Baz tried the methodical approach Penrith uses, it didn’t work. And I don’t think changing the 7 will work either, could actually bring back the Baz effect.
