Honestly........and they wonder why people lose interest in the NRL.......are we expected to believe the crap that comes with every Brisbane signing that they all take massive pay cuts to play under Bennett.....get fucked

KNIGHTS prop Korbin Sims is set to take a whopping $265,000 pay cut this season to join the Broncos immediately.

Sims has secured a release from the final year of his contract with Newcastle, taking a mammoth hit to the pocket to play under former mentor Wayne Bennett at Red Hill in 2017 on a two-year deal.

Foxsports.com.au understands that due to salary cap constraints the Broncos only have second tier salary cap space available for 2017, which prevents them paying more than $85,0000 for Sims’ services this year.

However with James Roberts’ future clouded, a spot in their top 25 squad could open up pending the NRL Integrity Unit’s investigation into allegations Roberts assaulted a woman at a Gold Coast nightclub last Saturday.

Sims’ salary at Newcastle has been reported as $400,000 for 2017, but foxsports.com.au understands the figure is in fact $350,000, with the Knights already having paid around $90K this year.

They won’t contribute another cent towards a payout for him to leave the club, and this was a sticking point in negotiations between his management and the Knights until a deal was struck on Thursday night.

The Broncos are believed to be making up part of the discrepancy in the 2018 portion of Sims’ contract.

Having played under 20s at Brisbane before moving south, Sims returns to the Broncos to bolster Bennett’s pack after the exits of Corey Parker (retirement) and Jarrod Wallace (Gold Coast).

It’s understood Sims pushed for an extended deal with Newcastle last season.

But with the Knights unwilling to rush into talks with any of their current roster after two successive wooden spoons, Sims began to look elsewhere to shore up his future.

The chance to link again with Bennett, who handed Sims his NRL debut during his time at Newcastle, was a significant factor in his decision to leave after 76 games for the club.

“The club carefully considered the request and following further discussions with Korbin and his management have decided to grant his release,” CEO Matt Gidley said.

“We thank Korbin for his contribution to the club and wish him and his family all the best for the future.”

Sims’ exit continues to free up serious funds for a recruitment spree for the cellar dwellers.

It’s the silver lining to a horrendous week for the club, with local junior Jarrod Mullen facing a career ending ban after testing positive to steroids and prop Pauli Pauli suffering a dislocated hip in a serious car crash on Thursday.

The tearing up of Mullen’s $600,000 a year contract, combined with the cash saved by Sims’ departure will give the Knights a war chest close to $1 million to go to market with.

Newcastle are eyeing off Cowboys representative stalwart Matt Scott as a marquee buy for 2018, with preparations under way for a two-year deal worth as much as $1.5 million to be tabled to the 31-year-old veteran.

Scott, off-contract at the end of 2017, just this week confirmed to foxsports.com.au that providing for his family was his number one priority, and “if that’s moving clubs or staying at the Cowboys I’m yet to see.”

The Knights, as well as Brisbane, also recently made a play for Roosters enforcer Dylan Napa before the burly Queenslander re-signed with the Chooks until the end of 2019.

The club has also expressed interest in star Sharks pair Jack Bird and Valentine Holmes.

Sims’ exit follows the departure of older brother Tariq to the Dragons in mid-2016, who also had time remaining on his deal with Newcastle before securing a release to take up a three-year deal with the Red V.

BULLSHIT ... absolute bullshit.

Just abolish the salary cap as clearly it doesn't apply to all 16 clubs.

I thought if he was second tier, he will get match payments on top of that (pushing them over the cap). Not that any of this matters as Broncos clearly don't have a cap.

The salary crap works just fine, in Bronco land and Roosters anyway. Broncos dollars just stretch further than any other club's dollar does. $85k in Broncos land equates to $350k at any other team, plus players always end up with TPAs which magically appear whenever they sign (no club involvement here - just ask NRL). Definitely nothing to see here!

TPA's strike again. NRL should force clubs to be completely transparent

They done it with Gasnier wasnt it?? Totally agree, its a gap in the rules that these clubs are taking advantage of.

If NRL placed another club in Brisbane, would it be able to survive? Would fans switch over? Sorry I don't know anything about the region. But if they put another team then it would take away the pulling power Broncos have

It's pretty unbelievable what some clubs can get away with.

I feel sorry for Newcastle, it's sad to see what's happening there thanks to Tinkler and Bennett.

There needs to be a South Qld side around Logan (which is one area Broncos get a lot of juniors from), but Broncos have resisted it largely.

B..b.bb...bb..bbbbuuut Parker was on $47,348,900,231.87 per season.

You do know that the Knights have already paid him about 3 months of his salary this year.

Players get paid every 3 months starting in November.

It all balances out for the Broncos because Darius Boyd is paying big money to "play under" Bennett.

It's ridiculous really. I hope their second set of books is found someone soon. No player I know of would sacrifice over three quarters of their salary this willingly. The NRL won't find anything amiss about a deal like this.

So if the article is correct that he was on 350,000. The knights paid 1/4 of that, help him train and release him before he plays, they're paying $87,000. Broncos then pay the same fur all the benefits. I really hope the NRL investigate this and intervene.

Yep true but that is also the same amount the Broncos are paying him for the remaining 9. In the words of the Robot it....
