After five years of false starts and chasing their tale around in circles, the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs are back on the fast-track to once again becoming one of the NRL’s power clubs.

But the leaked images and videos of Viliame Kikau and Reed Mahoney being courted by the club have got everyone in rugby league talking.
The Bulldogs have landed a major coup with the signature of Kikau but there’s no doubt the picture of big ‘Bill’ in the Canterbury-Bankstown polo with Gus Gould and Trent Barrett was a bad scene.

The good news for the Belmore faithful is the club is still a long way from finished in terms of its recruitment drive for 2023 and beyond.

Parramatta hooker Mahoney is the next player the Bulldogs have got atop their hit list as they set about trying to return the club to being a finals powerhouse.

Canterbury-Bankstown are poised to put a four-year deal to Mahoney which will heap further pressure on Parramatta’s low-balling tactics at the negotiating table.

It’s true the Bulldogs’ spine for next season is still very much a work-in-progress but in five-eighth Matt Burton the club has undoubtedly struck gold.

Fullback Matt Dufty on a one-year deal playing for his career and the additions of Josh Addo-Carr, Tevita Pangai Jr and Paul Vaughan also mean there is still multiple reasons for optimism at Belmore next year.
If the Bulldogs can also convince Eels hooker Mahoney to return to Canterbury-Bankstown then all of a sudden the club is seriously on its way to the roster overhaul previous management spruiked for the past three seasons.

The next step for general manager of football Gould will be how he balances the delicate art of the salary cap in terms of continuing to add and also move on players in terms of the Bulldogs’ top 30 roster.

There’s no question the club still needs to improve its key position players.
The return of Willie Mason is a smart play on so many levels given Big Willie understands as well as anyone what made the Bulldogs one of the NRL’s benchmark clubs in the early 2000s.

The Clive Churchill Medallist from the 2004 Grand Final cut his teeth under Steve Folkes when the Bulldogs were famous for how hard they trained and played.

The family club may have lost its way and been absent from the finals for the past five seasons but with a couple more key signatures the Bulldogs finishing 15th in 2020 and collecting the wooden spoon last season was the absolute rock bottom.

Hoops shouldn’t be able to write about the dogs ever
I disagree, I wouldn't disagree with anything in his article. We need Mahoney and some clarity around who is in the 1 and 7 going forward to make a call on how successful we will be in 2023 onwards.

Buzz blatantly has an issue with Gould and his article he wrote last night was pathetic.

Article seemed balanced enough, the images were a poor look, that’s pretty obvious but he acknowledges the direction the club is heading and calls out the positives including Big Willie coming back to the fold.

In the modern era, we shouldn’t be negotiating with people in an open public restaurant and taking pictures with future recruits in rooms with security cameras in use.. surely deals are done in the CEO’s office or private settings.
