HE AFL needs a third team in Sydney.

Think it's crazy? The GWS Giants already have 12,000 members in our second season. That's more than Wests Tigers, Cronulla, Manly and Penrith in the NRL.

Look at what we have already achieved in western Sydney and tell me the AFL couldn't support a third team here.

We have a first-class venue in Skoda Stadium in the Sydney Olympic Park precinct. It's a 25,000-seat stadium that we reckon we can fill on a regular basis within five years.

We have an elite training facility with the Tom Wills Oval being opened this week.

We have a great facility in StarTrack Oval in Canberra.

This didn't exist four years ago. The AFL should be planning now to have a team in southern Sydney, representing the Shire down to the South Coast.

They need to be just as brave as they were with the Giants, when they made a $200 million investment in western Sydney.

Still, the AFL was 15 years late in starting the Giants in western Sydney. We can't make that mistake again.

We're building the foundations of the Giants now. They are strong foundations that will allow the club to be on its feet and firing in five to 10 years.

We've got to make up for lost time. The AFL needs to be thinking now about planning for another Sydney-based team in the next 15 years. Yes, it should be that soon.

If you really want to get AFL in a much stronger position, you really should have a team in the north, west, east and south of Sydney.

Sydney's population is expected to be pushing six million in 2030.

Three teams means two million people for the three clubs. It means all three have the scope to be among the biggest in the AFL. The potential is limitless.

The Giants might be just finding our feet now, but we'll be ready when the third club comes in.

The Swans have been here for 31 years and have 33,000 members as well.

The game is bigger than the Swans and it's bigger than us.

We have to be quicker with our development than the Swans were.

There is no plan B to slow down or scale back the ambitious targets we have set. We already have the foundations in place for the Giants to become a big club.

Even Andrew Demetriou thinks we'll one day become as big as the West Coast Eagles are in Perth.

Many people in Sydney will be worried and shocked by this. We've just arrived and we intend to make western Sydney proud.

Sydney is only going to get bigger and all those people deserve another team that's going to represent them and make them proud, too.

Sheedy says with Izzy Folau playing this AwFuL game, the polynesians will ditch the Rugby codes and take up the sport.

Sheedy says take the game to NZ and they will convert.

I am not sure if he is just plain delusional to think that the off field 'success' of the Giants should be an indicator to have a 3rd team in Sydney.

AFL could do worse than starting up a central coast team - they've been begging for a spot in the NRL for years and looks like it won't be happening any time soon. Not sure how the locals would respond at first but they'd have access to all central coast / newcastle. Possibility for cross-code promotions with the Jets or Mariners. Could be interesting

PLEASE they've been crying out for nothing! The Prelim. Final GOT 10,000 For the Mariners... PRELIM FINAL! WOW... All the League matches this year there have got crowds bigger then that, but still nothing to force the NRL to seriously look into them, why would the AFL? Who have no proper juniors there (Auskick kids are not juniors), have no history there and who are already losing millions upon millions with GWS & the Swans.

GWS Might have 12,000 members (How many are ticketed BTW??) the majority of them are in Canberra... Do they even play games in Western Sydney anymore? It's a massive failure so far and he knows it, he's just trying to drum up publicity.

Can only speak for myself... but the Gay WS giants are having zero impact ... apart
from Izzy, who has flown the coup ... I wouldn't know a GWS player if one fell over me.

Kevin Shitty has lost his marbles....

In saying that... the Waratarts aren't househould names here in Sydney either .....
the NRL have got Sydney covered ......

What is Sheedy smoking, his comments are fkn retarted. The swans are the only AFL team the GayFL lovers follow in Sydney noone could give a shit when GWS play. Yeah swans 33k and gws 12k have okay membership numbers but look at sydney nrl teams combined rabbitohs 26k, dragons 19k, bulldogs 17k, eels 16k, roosters 13k, tigers 11k, sharks 9k, panthers 7k...& they've only just started focussing on NRL memberships imagine in 5 years or so they will all be double! Crowd numbers in Sydney speak for themself as well, Sydney love Rugby League!

I'm not pro-AFL, but you fail to recognize that all of the NRL clubs you mentioned have long-established fan-bases. It's much different than when you are dealing with expansion teams.

Gladiator is right but lets expand this a little...

Sydney clubs have been relying on pokie hand outs from league clubs and didnt really focus much attention on membership until the labor government introduced the 47% pokies tax on leagues club.

From there on, Sydney NRL clubs have been crying wolf that this could lead clubs going broke and destroy the NRL. It was only then Russell Crowe led the membership drive for souFFS, then Noad introduced a goal called 10k members by 2010 for us then other clubs followed suit.

Its only then we have started playing catch up to the gAyFL for memberships.

I'll commend the 40yo cougars from Castle Hill making the trek to Skoda Stadium with their 7 or 8yo sons for mothers day.

Kevin Sheedy goes on a racist tirade

GWS Giants coach Kevin Sheedy has gone on an extraordinary rant following his side's capitulation against Adelaide Crows in a bid to defend the poor crowd on show at Skoda Stadium.

The Giants were thumped by 135 points on Sunday afternoon with a crowd of just over 5,000 turning up to watch the winless side’s first home game of the year in the Olympic precinct.

Sheedy said the club didn’t have anyone from the "immigration department" handling their fan recruitment as, apparently, Western Sydney Wanderers do.

"It’s a pity because that’s how many turned up after a pretty solid performance against Essendon last week," he said.

"So, it’s just going to go and tell everybody how tough it’s going to be to build this club. It’s as simple as that.

"We don’t have the recruiting officer called the immigration department recruiting fans for Western Sydney Wanderers – we don’t have that on our side.

"We’re actually going to start up a whole new ball park and go and find fans because that’s what happens when you bring a lot of people through, channel into a country and put them into the west of Sydney and they build a club like that one year and all of a sudden they’ve got 10,000 fans and probably 20,000 going to a game."

Such was the embarrassing nature of the defeat, Adelaide forward Tom Lynch kicked more points than the Giants’ total score.

Sheedy is a neanderthal redneck. His comments were moronic and typical of the afl mafia mentality which has worked so hard in the past 20 years to undermine other sporting codes in this country.

I'm not surpised by his comments. The AFL fears the growth of football more than any other code .

AFL made a strategic blunder with GWS. It didn't anticipate a future soccer team in the region.

Soccer is a unviersal sport that appeals to wide rang of cultures, including Anglo-Australians. Soccer is not limited to any one culture. Western Sydney is truly a multi-cultural mix in which GWS/AFL failed to consider. Wanderers capatalised on a market craving for a team to identify with - and soccer united them all, hence why there was a massive support base.

Even at the first EVER game, without any win against their name, or without any wagon to hop on, they got 10500. That's a good starting solid base.

Only time GWS hit over 10 000 in Sydney, in their first season was for Sydney Swans derby. Oh and Essendon game, I remember that game because free tickets were being handed out like confetti (I should know, i went becuase it was free) and still only managed something like 11 000 fans. I left after 3rd qtr due to pure boredom.
