Teen prodigy Joseph Suaalii is set to become the richest 16-year-old sportsman in Australian history after reportedly signing a lucrative deal with Rugby Australia.

In a massive coup for the 15-a-side code, RA look to have sensationally snapped up the youngster on a monster three-year $3 million deal after it was widely expected he had chosen to remain with the NRL at South Sydney Rabbitohs.

Contracted with Souths until the end of next season, Suaalii last month agreed to a three-year extension at Redfern worth around $1.7 million.

But the Daily Telegraph reports, the Rabbitohs were unable to register the contract with the NRL until Suaalii turned 17 on August 1, which has given RA the time they need to steal the talent with an astonishing $1-million-a-year offer.

The teen freak is expected to debut for the NSW Waratahs later this year and will earn $300,000 for the next three months, before then pocketing $2.7 million from 2021 to the end of 2023.

It is the richest deal for a teenager in the history of the Australian football codes and equates to a weekly earning of nearly $20,000.

Rugby Australia sources close to Suaalii reportedly told The Daily Telegraph on Tuesday afternoon the fullback would now reject Souths to become a Wallaby in light of the offer.

He could represent Australia in Rugby Sevens at the Tokyo Olympics, should the rescheduled games go ahead next year.

That's a lot of money to throw at a teenager. The big risk is that it becomes a distraction for him. He'll have a shitload of people hanging on his coat tails and it's not certain that he'll retain the focus required to become an elite.

Nasheed here,
Geez. That's a lot of money for a kid. He looks good but he could be a Rugby League Graeme Hick. Can make 400 in domestics but struggled against the extra zip.

stupid rule form the nrl not allowing kids this young to sign.

But a beautiful mess....I love it when Souths get screwed!!!
Yeah but we got Cook. Mic drop!

Have we been screwed though? This is all a risk. It may be the biggest blessing in disguise.

Ps. I hope you're a rugby fan otherwise it's cutting your nose to spite your face because he's lost to our game.

A lot of money for 3 years. As he could potentially jump codes after that investment in him anyways.

Definitely a massive offer for a 16yr old. He may as well take it make the big coin and as per usual come back to the nrl in a few years. Got a bright future ahead, world at his feet already.!!!

What 16yo turns down a million a year before even playing a game? Crazy money....and he would be crazy to turn it down imo.
He'd be wasting his time though sporting wise .....Rugby is dying game in this country. Still....he's young so could always come back in a few years.

Correct. A lot of players even at their peak never earn a mil a year!

True, but it would have been the same in league. Insane money offered by Souths too.

It really shows that the amount of quality coming through the juniors isn't spectacular when clubs are prepared to offer ridiculous money like this.

AND the NRL has still been talking expansion. If there are a wealth of talented players why won't clubs help out the Warriors with quality, not just fill in depth players.

You only have to look at the bidding wars that take place for spine players to see that player production doesn't quite match demand. This situation kind of began when they asked clubs to drop funding to reserve grade in favour of NYC teams. I think it's created a situation where many players that might have made the eventual step up to NRL standard in their early to mid 20's are now giving up on becoming career players if they haven't made it by 22-23.

To my way of thinking, the whole top 30 deal with limited development contracts will put more strain on clubs in future too. At any point a player might finally take a leap in talent/physicality/mentality that is required to step to NRL level. But if that hasn't happened in the preseason they're unable to be promoted. So in some cases clubs can't even reward their most in form juniors through a season.

It's no surprise that clubs aren't willing to offer the Warriors any talent on loan.

Prettyy much as you say. To the credit of the Eels (shock horror) they have loaned Alvaro and Jennings to the Warriors at least experienced and solid layers...
