John Bateman heading home to Super League

John Bateman’s future is decided, and the news is not good for Canterbury fans as yet another star shuns recruitment moves by the cashed-up club.

Unhappy Canberra backrower John Bateman looks set to turn his back on the NRL and return to England at the end of the season.

It is understood the English Test forward will knock back strong interest from Canterbury and St George Illawarra to link with the Wigan Warriors in the Super League.

Bateman has been at the centre of an ugly dispute with the Raiders after seeking a pay upgrade on his $600,000 deal.

It is understood the Raiders had previously offered his management $750,000 for next year but that wasn’t enough.

Canberra chief executive Don Furner was unavailable for comment.

Bateman had a clause in his contract where he could renegotiate his deal each season but the way the negotiations have played out has really left a bitter taste at the Raiders.

Bateman was the Dally M backrower of the year in 2019 but hasn’t played so far this season after shoulder surgery and complications that followed.

If it was decided wouldn't it read The English test forward has knocked back.

So the above is also saying Canberra offered him 750K for next season? Yet we offered him apparently 2m for 3 years or approx. 666K a year, why would he leave Canberra and come to us for less money when he was pissed at being only on 600K this year?

I think these journalists have no bloody idea and making shit up...

Bateman's and a damn good player but we dont know how his body would've responded after his injuries.

I think this is a blessing in disguise for us.

We do need to sort out our coaching situation though. We can't just be in coaching limbo when we supposedly have $3M to spend.
I wanted Bateman for his attitude more than anything and he was a legit rep standard player. Now looking at the other options there’s not too many players like that left on the market.

When you look at the players available and the coaching situation as you pointed it then it won’t matter how much money we have and we are going to have trouble filling the roster with the right players.

Canberra offered him the $750k months ago that’s when Bateman went out and got the new manager who promised him the world and didn’t deliver. Canberra then took the deal off the table.

LOL what did he think he was worth? 1 Million?

I keep hearing 800K there is no difference between 750 and 800 after tax etc.

His manager made him believe he could get 900k somewhere.

If he's heading back to the UK for his daughter then you cant really blame the club for that. Now we have to get CHN back or steal anther gun back rower by enticing them to break their contract - or go with Topine and Doorey and hope they come good

Great. Here comes a 600k extension for Elliott and Tolman and a press release about Bulldogs DNA.

I won't blame the club for missing out on Bateman if his desire was to head home for his family but if they don't entice players to break their contracts then that cap space will be completely wasted as there isn't much talent left that's off contract.

If Batemen wants 700K, how much is Kikau worth? Would he leave the Panthers and come here for that sort of coin?

Unless Cotric really wants to live in Sydney - that's our only hope

They can't add up either, they obviously failed maths in primary school, it's demonstrated in almost every article they write.

Hard luck dogs. It's obvious you were never going to get him, but by having a crack you've advertised the quality of player you're wanting.

If that's true he has rocks in his cock. A premiership contending team offering 750 with all your friends (and his bitch) there in a city you like, should have jumped even if he was offered 800 in Sydney.

Like I've said before I wouldn't feed him, but guess the fat lady hasn't sung either ...

In theory but they will still need a back Rower (CHN?) and they aren't going to pay near 600k for a winger.
