These coaches were converted from old timber end platform cars by Ritchie Bros, Granville. There were steel cars from the start, but they needed supplementary cars for the fleet that weren't too heavy for the power cars, which only had one motored axle back then.Sydney's first electric red rattlers were timber.

Austinmer was always my favourite beach. In the 50s it was electric train from Belmore, then a steam train ride from Sydenham, past the coke works at Coal Cliff, and the sea views from Stanwell Park all the way to Austinmer. We had some great family outings there.View attachment 36759
