The last hansom cab in Sydney makes its final journey (1937). The horse's name was Darkwing.
Back in the 90s I was coachman for the "Horse and Carriage Company of Sydney" taking tourists around the Rocks and as far as Central station.
Great fun and sometimes hair raising.
Most of the horses were ex-Trotters and if they accidentally clipped a steel road plate (used for covering holes) it would make a loud "DING" sound and all of a sudden that placid trot turned into the bell-lap at Harold park! The ears would do back the neck would stiffen and they would break into their racing stride and we were off at full pace and it was a hell of a job pulling them up!
As you could imagine, hammering down George St at full pace with a carriage full of Japanese salarymen on their honeymoons was always a treat...
The Horses loved it I had a heart attack and no matter how hard you tried to avoid the plates it would happen at least once or twice a week.
Fun times.
