I am ashamed of what I did to my family: Ben Barba's emotional apology

Storm book final date with Sharks

It's almost four years to the day the one-time NRL poster boy Ben Barba's life began to unravel, when his "all about me" attitude sent him down a destructive path that he now admits he feared would cost him his family and his career.

"I let the spotlight get to me and I was ashamed of what I did to my family," Barba told Fairfax Media about the tumultuous period in his life during his time at the Bulldogs.

"Absolutely, the spotlight got to me, and I won't shy away from that. I lost track of who I was and what I was. I did let it go. Especially with myself and Ainslie [partner Ainslie Currie] at the time. I'm so happy that I have been able to patch things up with her.

"We're in such a good head space now and have added another two little girls to the crew. We're flying at the moment and everyday I'm so thankful. I've learnt from my mistakes and my family is happy. That's allowed me to enjoy my footy again."

Barba's downward spiral began with allegations of domestic violence, for which he was never charged. His once-squeaky-clean image was tarnished further still as revelations emerged of his wild partying with friends in the so-called Epic Bender Crew.

But still he wrestled with the demons, even as they brought about his undoing. And as his personal life span out of control, the tormented fullback searched in vain for the missing ingredient that had seen him set the NRL alight in 2012.

He couldn't find it in Brisbane and was eventually shown the door by Wayne Bennett. It was only down to the misdemeanours of Todd Carney that Barba landed a third shot at an NRL career, with the Cronulla Sharks in 2015.

He finally seems to have found what he was looking for in the Shire, but it wasn't before 12 months of soul-searching through a season of mediocrity and heartache.

"There were times where I'd sit in my room and cry with my missus and ask her if she had the answer for what was happening, wondering 'What the F is going on?'," Barba said.

"The last few years were the toughest times of my life. Things weren't going well for me on the footy field and off it. Ainslee and my kids, I can't thank them enough for sticking with me and believing in me and reassuring me if I worked hard and really focused on that I'd hopefully get back to here."

It is fitting that, after watching his life spiral out of control following the 2012 grand final with Canterbury, Barba can finally open up on the nightmares of the past as he prepares for yet another premiership decider.

His actions during his time at the Bulldogs fractured the relationship with the mother of his children to the point he thought he would lose them altogether.

"Yeah, definitely. There were times there where I thought, 'This is bull---t', this is not the way I wanted it to end," Barba said of his relationship with his family.

"What happened in 2012, I probably referred back to that too much and blamed myself for a lot. And I know it was my fault. I know it was all me, but I had to move on from that. But I hadn't moved on from that. I was letting it hold me back there a little bit. But as soon as I let that go and knew I could move on it allowed me to focus back here. I'm so happy I stuck with it and fought threw it.

"Sometimes I have to pinch myself. I've come a long way – and I don't think I've told too many people – but I've come a long way from just sitting in my room and sobbing to myself. To be here now and heading to another grand final, for myself personally, I could have given it up and walked away, but I'm very thankful to the guys here for sticking with me and believing in me to allow me to get back to the way I'm playing and enjoying my football."

Barba lost plenty of friends along the way, including close mates Sam Kasiano and Frank Pritchard. He knows he also lost the trust and respect of his teammates at Canterbury, taking the blame for what transpired at the club where he made his name.

"I hurt a lot of people and a lot of people are probably still angry at me for what happened," Barba said. "Just my teammates, you go into battle with everyone and you want the trust and the belief of every guy beside you. I let them down. And I probably treated them in a way where it was all about me. It's hard to say, but I knew personally that I had let them down."

What actually happened between him and Frankie and Kas? Were the rumors going around during that time actually true? or did he just have disagreements with them?

I'm glad the therapy has worked and he's taking responsibility for his actions, unlike so many who perpetually blame others or circumstances for their bad choices.

Barba and Hannant were treated well by the Dogs, even allowing them to go back to Qld for their family's sake. SBW just up and left. What is it about our club that good players get into strife and want out?

Barba loved the club , it was obvious by the way he kissed the logo on his jersey after just about every try .

I'd say the combination of arguing with his team mates , being under valued by Des plus his marriage problems would've been enough to warrant a change.

I think we are the family club not the party club. So it doesn't appeal to everyone. All good for the players with wives and kids. They go to training, play the game and go home.

But the younger generation that want to go out for a drink or have fun it's probably not too appealing.

I have bumped into a lot of bulldogs players in the past (especially trex) and most times he was with guys from other clubs, or the other "family" guys were having dinners or something quiet.

Then you see the roosters boys who go out together. I even saw Maloney and joe burgess out with them on more then 1 occasion this year (both players left the club yet still socialise with them). So without knowing too much I would say the roosters have a team with lots of like minded people who enjoy a drink and enjoy to go out (good or bad it's what gels that team together). We seem like a team with slightly more mature players who see a night out as dinner with the boys or with the wives too.

Funny thing is a few of the players that left were the party boys (idris, Barba). Mind you neither of them kicked on with their career.

I also think it's why we can't attract many top line players. Ok our cap situation might not allow it, and the club management might not want to buy players. They would rather produce them, but I think our club isn't on the top list of clubs people want to play for, maybe it's the culture, maybe it's the coach, maybe it's the money. Either way I can't remember the last super star we recruited (besides bozza.... for obvious reasons).

I think when Thaiday and hodges got into his ear about how they were making more then him (and he just won the dally m) and when he went for an upgrade he was knocked back may have angered him too. Then broncos offered him the 800k and he took the money (had nothing to do with family or relocating or anything like that, because look where he has been for the last 2 years with his partner and kids....)

It all boiled down to cash. And had we slung him an extra 100-150k he may have forgotten his home sickness.

That's also why the club made a big fuss to ensure he didn't get an upgrade at the broncos. But we all know how that ended up.....

Spot on..it was being under valued.

He was the reason we did so well in 2012 yet that wasn't enough reason for Des to increase his salary.

In noticed our club has too many sub groups and factions with our playing groups for some reason...

he is a passenger on that sharks side and the teams releasing him lead 2-1 in grand final appearances over teams signing him

once ennis retires and the sharks go back to shit we can go back to feeling good about his release tbh

A little bit of 'butting heads' with Frank's Mrs. She had not taken too kindly to something he did and attempted to settle him down.

There were a heap of stories but apparently barba borrowed money off pritchards wife(barba was a big gambler at the time) because his barbas mrs controlled the funds and would not give him after so much gambling and also made a play kas mrs on a different occassion, you hear different stories though.
What i did notice though was in 2013 there were very few games where both barba and kas played together in the same game...they say injuries but you would think there was more to it
