I’ll drive him over myself’: Flanagan leads push to get Burton to Belmore early
By Christian Nicolussi and Adrian Proszenko
March 13, 2021 — 7.37pm

Canterbury playmaker Kyle Flanagan has offered to hop in his car and drive down the M4 Motorway to collect Matt Burton if it means getting him to the Bulldogs early.
Trent Barrett will take on Ivan Cleary and former club Penrith next Saturday, but the real storyline keeps brewing behind the scenes with the Bulldogs refusing to ease up on their push to secure Burton’s immediate release. In November, Burton signed a three-year deal with the Bulldogs starting in 2022, but Canterbury want him now.
The Knights host the Bulldogs in round 1 of the 2021 NRL Premiership.
Cleary has lost count of the times he has slammed the door shut on Canterbury and knows Burton has a role to play at his club, especially when Nathan Cleary – and possibly Jarome Luai – are required for NSW Origin duty.
Flanagan said he knew first hand how frustrating it was to believe you were ready for the NRL, only to be forced to bide your time in reserve grade, something Burton continued to do at the Panthers on Saturday when he ran out in the No.6 jersey for the club’s NSW Cup side against the Rabbitohs.
Canterbury officials are mindful of making too much noise for fear of upsetting current five-eighth Jake Averillo, but they have a big opinion of him and know he will remain in the 17 as a utility or even in the centres.

I’ll go and pick Matt up if he wants me to,” Flanagan told The Sun-Herald about landing Burton early. “I thought Jake did a good job [against the Knights] – I have full faith in him – but Matt Burton is a good player and he’s playing reserve grade. Let him come.

“He’s a good kid and wants to play first grade. I remember when I was sitting in reserve grade and all you want to do is play first grade. It’s hard when you sit on the lounge on a Saturday and you watch your teammates go and play first grade. Hopefully things work out.”

On Saturday night, the Bulldogs’ push to lure Burton early took another twist. New Canterbury chief executive Aaron Warburton and chairman John Khoury were spotted in the stands at Panthers Stadium watching their future No.6 in action.

Asked about their presence at the game, Warburton told The Sun-Herald: “I’m in week three of the job and I wanted to get out here and watch Matt run around and John has come out with me.

We were in Newcastle last night and we want to see what all this fuss is about. It was pleasing for me that before my time [began], we had signed him from 2022 onwards.

GETTY
“This is a good chance to see him in action. John and I see this as building a very passionate bond around the future success of Canterbury.

“We’ve spent three days together at a strategic planning session in Newcastle to start the process of really getting our front office in order. We came back and the first thing we do the next day is watch Matt go around.”

Burton told the Herald last month: “By the looks of it, I’m here [at Penrith]. I just want to play footy at the end of the day. I’d like to be in the starting team every week.”

While Burton could not have solved the poor handling errors that cost Canterbury dearly against Newcastle on Friday night, his inclusion will add class to their attack, while also allowing Averillo to roam.

“Jake is a runner,” Flanagan said of Averillo. “He had some nice touches [against Newcastle] and the more he gets used to first grade he’ll take a lot of pressure off me.”

Barrett hailed Flanagan as the club’s best player in the Hunter. Flanagan was not getting bogged down with the individual No.7 battle against Cleary next weekend.

“I thought I played quite well and did my job for the team, but it’s a team game and we didn’t get the result,” Flanagan said. “Baz’s [Barrett’s] message to me before the game was to go out there and feel confident and free, and I felt like that.

“There will be a lot of talk around the game with Baz and Penrith. I won’t worry about going up against Nathan Cleary, I’ll just be looking to do exactly what I did [against Newcastle].

He’s the NSW halfback. [Newcastle’s] Mitchell Pearce was my idol growing up. It’s good to go up against [class] halfbacks – you want to get one over them, and it will be no different next week.”

On triple m yesterday i think it was ready or hoops was saying it should occur after round 2 or 3 ?
I heard it and I hope he’s right. Not just cause we will be a lot more dangerous in attack but his defence looks solid as well.

Panthers have absolutely no reason to let him go, its in their best interest if he stays to cover injury, suspension or rep duty.

The only reasoning they could have to let him go is 1. Burton's best interest, and 2. Team morale and I don't th8-k there's to many issues with team morale at the Panthers.

I'd love for Burton to join us this season but it really doesn't seem likely at all and I'm over reading and talking about the same story.

If we are going to suck ass because of our forwards not having a go then I'm happy to wait for Burton.

Could be media stirring the pot and misquoting flanagan but i would rather he not mention openly at all who he prefers as his halves partner.

The signing of Matt Burton has to be one of the most talked about single-events on the kennel of all time.

From the suggestion threads, to rumours, to the official announcement, and then all the debate about an early release - I can't remember another thing like it?

Me too bro. They look really cocky too. I will be happy when they fail again this year and start to slowly lose their squad
It's a shame because I usually back any team that is outside the boring same looked after teams each year.

Flano showing heaps of faith in Averillo.........
Yup. As much as I'd like Burton here now, players should keep it quite. Avo didn't play a good game on Friday and hearing this wouldn't do his confidence any good.

He said nice things about Jake, but its pretty obvious he and the staff want Burton in the 6 as soon as possible.

Keep working on your own game Flanno and keep quiet.

Why would the Panthers release Burton when they’re an injury or state of origin selection away from needing him?

I remember Trex coming over was a big deal on TK.
