OPENER Mike Hussey has hit a stylish century on debut in the second Test against the West Indies on a rain-marred day two in Hobart.

The West Australian had powered to 113 not out about half an hour before stumps as Australia moved to 1-253, in reply to the West Indian first innings score of 149 at Bellerive Oval.

Matthew Hayden scored 110 off 168 balls before being caught by Dwayne Bravo.

It was Hayden's fourth century in four Tests.

Captain Ricky Ponting came in for Hayden and moved to 16 not out by 6.25pm Sydney time.

Hayden and Hussey had needed just 36 runs to equal the visitors' opening dig.

Hussey, 30, is filling in for regular opener Justin Langer who is expected to return from a rib injury for next week's Test in Adelaide.

Hussey was under some pressure coming into the match following scores of 1 and 29 in his Test debut in Brisbane this month.

The West Australian was out both times at the Gabba with pull shots, his first innings shot in particular a poor effort from such a disciplined performer.

However he refused to keep the stroke under wraps today using it to great effect as he led Australia into a strong position.

He hit 11 fours and brought up his half century by smashing Daren Powell to the boundary through mid wicket.

Hussey waited longer than any other Australian cricketer to wear the baggy green, being picked after 176 first class matches.

His knock today should keep him in with a chance of playing at the Adelaide Oval as he could be considered for a middle order spot.

In another worrying sign for the West Indies, youngster Marlon Samuels has not taken the field today.

The gifted right-handed batsman has struggled with knee problems in the past and was suffering from a sore left knee today.

Samuels has had his knee strapped and has been undergoing treatment.

A West Indian spokesman expected him to be able to return to the field today and bat in the second innings.

Light rain delayed the start of play until 2pm today, Hayden and Hussey adding another 56 runs in about 80 minutes of action in between further rain delays.

The Australians started cautiously before Hayden nearly ran himself out with a streaky single to substitute fielder Dwayne Smith, who failed to hit the stumps.
