Have cars really advanced much in the last 20 years?

Have cars really advanced much in the last 20 years? They look different every couple of years but there have been no real meaningful advances?

In the last 20 years all the advances have mainly been gadgets rather than anytjing substantial.

I mean air conditioning was a huge must in a car, power steering, electronic fuel injection was a huge advance, cruise control was a great advance, decent car audio.

But these days the advances are comical.. heated seats? Lane assist, bluetooth? Its a car!!

How do we substantially better the toyota camry v6 from 1999? It has proved reliable, powerful torquey v6, power steer air cond, electronic fuel injection, cd player, auto lights off, power mirrors, anti theft immobiliser, power windows, roomy, quiet and smooth... where are the advances?

Cars have become more powerful these days but also much heavier, lugging about useless gadgets.

Look at subaru wrx, looks different today than it did 20 years ago, but no faster. It has more power on paper but heavier.. just has more trinkets these days but fundamentally added nothing substantial.

The ford fairmont ghia of 1987 had digital dash, oscillating air cond vents, adjustable head rests, electronic fuel injection, power windows, mirrors cruise control.. todays cars just useless weight in them, whats with the fake quad tip exhaust pipes.. look under car and its a single pipe to front of car
