The Jackson Hastings affair continues to haunt Manly after the NRL knocked back a request to allow Manase Fainu to make his debut against St George Illawarra while the out-of-favour playmaker remains on the books.

The development comes as former Sea Eagle Anthony Watmough unleashed an extraordinary spray at skipper Daly Cherry Evans and ex-coaches Des Hasler and Geoff Toovey.

The Sea Eagles named Fainu in the No.9 jersey as a replacement for Apisai Koroisau, who will be sidelined for 10 weeks with a broken foot. Koroisau was subbed off just 15 minutes into the loss to the Warriors, leaving a key spine position to be filled.

Denied: The NRL won't allow Manly to blood Manase Fainu, here with Moses Suli, while they have Hastings on their books. .

Coach Trent Barrett wanted his replacement to be Fainu, the captain of Manly’s premiership-winning NYC side. The former Parramatta junior has been in outstanding form in the lower grades and Barrett felt he was ready to make his first-grade debut.

In order for it to happen, Manly sought an exemption from the NRL, as he is not in the side’s top-30 contracted list. Under the rules, development players can only be promoted into first grade if there is no one in the top 30 squad playing in that position.

Exiled: Jackson Hastings remains a thorn in the side of the Sea Eagles.

As part of their submission to head office, the Sea Eagles argued that they didn’t have a specialist hooker in their ranks. However, the move was blocked because the governing body felt Lewis Brown and Hastings were both capable of filling the void.

“The player (Fainu) is currently a development player,” an NRL spokesperson said.

“In order for him to play in the Telstra Premiership, the club would need to request an exemption based on the circumstances, or alternatively upgrade the players’ contract.”

The decision is a blow to a Manly side slipping out of finals contention and one that could be in wooden spoon contention if they can’t turn around their form.

The Sea Eagles have refused to pick Hastings since his much-publicised fallout with Cherry-Evans, a spat which boiled over after the pair visited a strip club following the side’s loss on the Gold Coast in round five.

Manly had hoped Hastings would move on, freeing up salary cap space and a spot in the top 30. They have attempted to come up with a payout figure, but he has decided to dig his heels in and continue to pick up his pay cheque while playing reserve grade for feeder side Blacktown Workers.

The NRL find yet another way manipulate the 'fortunes' of clubs at their discretion.

So because Frawley and JMK can play hooker, we can't play Lachlan Lewis.. even with Foran and Nu Brown injured.

Yet Roosters were allowed to play Matt Ikuvalu, and Storm Justin Olam.... go figure.

The NRL is run by bloody morons. Any player under contract should be allowed to play for their club.

What’s the go with the NRL telling teams what positions people can play ?
This is a very slippery slope. Technically, the NRL can deny promotion of a prop, because a half in the top 30 is big enough to play front row ?
Fuck off *****.
