Let's also remember the real reason why they re-employee Ivan Cleary as head coach.

Nathan Cleary was coming off contract & all the stories going around were that the Tigers were going hard to bring him to Wests to join his dad.

Gus and others there new that the clubs future success was based around the up and coming half back steering the team into a successful era and had to keep him.

With all the other key pieces in place, bringing Ivan over would guarantee Nathan staying and keeping the talented young group together.

The rest is history.
Penrith won every single grade last year except Matts, and they were Matts minor premiers lol. Cleary has nothing to do with that

Ivan had plenty to do with that. He got the Warriors to a GF and the Panthers to the last 3 GF and 2 tItles. BUT… take Nathan out of that team and the don’t even make a GF let alone win one.

Ivan also fucked the Tigers for the next 5 years after he left.

To be fair....Gus setup the pathways to create a pool of talent.
Cleary’s results at three clubs were quite poor until he came back to the panthers after Gus had build them up
But it takes the right coach to pick and focus on the 17 or 22 players to retain and have firing at seasons end to win a premiership.

And Cleary did it. And he did it B2B with 3 straight GF appearances.

People tend to rubbish both Cleary and Robinson due to the talent pool.

I think it's just sour grapes.
Both are very good coaches.
It's wrong to rubbish Cleary but it is easier when you have so many to pick from !

Hand most of these coaches a stacked team and yes they have the ability to keep that team focused motivated fit and win you premierships, also helps if they’re also handed long term talented coaching staff ..

Move those same coaches on to a bottom 8 team where their job is to build that team up and move them up the ladder, and they quickly get found out.

Cleary’s now a B2B premiership winning coach, he was Barrett like in his first stint at the Panthers just avoiding the spoon, how’s he gone since walking back into a rebuilt top 4 team with a production line of talent to chose from, your point about Nathan is spot on and we see why it was worth screwing Gus over to get old man Cleary back there, with the club 95% rebuilt it made more sense to lose Gus as opposed to Nathan to the Tigers which I believe was where he and a few of his mates were heading.

How’d Mag go at South’s, how’d he go at the Tigers, Seibold at South’s, and again at the Bronco’s.

Right now there’s only 2 people in the NRL that I believe know how to build a team from the bottom into a winning premiership team and that’s Bellamy and Gould .. I don’t put Bennett in there because look at the quality of players he always had at the Bronco’s, look at the team he was handed at St George and look at how he performed at the Knights .. same can be said of the quality of players Robinson has always had.

What these bottom 8 clubs need to do is stop sacking these coaches because they can coach a stacked team, the question they really need to be asking is what is their general manager of football doing, what’s their recruitment team doing, what’s going on in their lower grades and why aren’t they producing a production line of talent … fix those areas and most of these coaches will win games and even premierships.

Most head coaches these days are glorified motivators …

On Bennett, he best skill is long term player relationships, their loyalty to him is unquestionable. That ability to build strong relationships also extends to other areas, one of which is recruitment. He has a network of pathways people who recruit for him, especially in SW Qld, and by the time he leaves the Dolphins in 2 years he will hand over to Woolf a very useful team that he can work with and build on.

he is very good but most of his forward pack would be retired our on their last years. He pulled the pin on newcastle when he failed there.

Bennett can obviously get a good team up for big games. He can definitely coach. I'm very interested to see how he goes creating a good team from the ground up. Hasn't been a great start recruitment wise but if he can get that team to the middle of the field he should be considered a great coach. If they get the spoon the Bennett shine might be tarnished for good. Will be fun to watch.

Horseshit. Gus punted Ivan and then Ivan took the opportunity to come back with his son steering the ship and made 3 GFs in 3 years. Ivan 3 Gus nil. Getting Reed Mudhoney and Villiame over are major achievements though so maybe Gus will turn the tide this year.

So why wasn't Cleary successful his first stint with the panthers as head coach? Gus is the main reason why panthers are now a successful club and it took many years to build.
