Brisbane Broncos have Greg Inglis deal signed off as legal by NRL
By Phil Rothfield
August 15, 2010 Greg Inglis's controversial switch from Melbourne Storm to Brisbane Broncos has been signed off as above board by the NRL.

A leaked email, obtained by The Sunday Telegraph, reveals the exact value of the deal -- $510,000 a season.

Part of the contract involves third-party sponsorships from NRMA Insurance and Channel Nine and also allows Inglis to drive a prestige Audi car free of charge for the duration of the deal.

The final details of the contract had to be signed off by five different parties - Broncos boss Bruno Cullen, salary cap auditor Ian Schubert, Storm CEO Ron Gauci, News Limited executive Stephen Rue and Inglis's manager Allan Gainey.

It has been reported another $40,000 will be paid to Inglis via his old club Melbourne and then be included in the Storm's second-tier salary cap for the next two years.

The value of the deal will be around $100,000 less than his illegal Storm contract, which included a flash $60,000 speed boat plus accommodation in Melbourne for his parents, that was secretly paid for by the club's disgraced former management.

The money aside, Inglis decided almost two months ago he wanted to play for the Broncos to be with his fiancee, Sally Robinson, who was recently transferred to Brisbane by her employers.

He only agreed to meet with the Gold Coast Titans out of courtesy and respect for managing director Michael Searle and coach John Cartwright, but he never seriously regarded it as an option.

Gainey said three weeks ago that the Broncos were his only serious option if he could gain a release from Melbourne Storm.

"He wants to buy a house in Brisbane with his girlfriend and settle down properly for the first time in his life," Gainey said.

"If it wasn't for Sally moving to Brisbane, there is no way he'd be leaving Storm.

"All this stuff about going from one News Ltd club to another is pie in the sky stuff.

"If his fiancee hadn't moved to Brisbane, he'd still be with her and playing for Melbourne next year."

Meanwhile, Cullen is fuming over suggestions in the Fairfax media and by a panellist on Thursday night's Matty Johns Show that the club was cheating the salary cap by signing Inglis.

The club is so detailed in its salary cap auditing that Schubert has even been made aware of a paltry $250 payment to a young player for a store appearance and four other payments of $300 for similar appearances by players.

The Broncos have been singled out for salary cap attention because they will field a superstar line-up next year including Inglis, Darren Lockyer, Sam Thaiday, Justin Hodges, Peter Wallace and Ben Hannant on top of a group of the most exciting young players in the competition.

The one-team, one-city scenario gives the Broncos a huge advantage over Sydney NRL clubs in attracting third-party sponsorship outside of the salary cap.

For example, Lockyer is included in the cap for only $250,000 because his massive profile and status in the game in Queensland has attracted corporate support from companies who are not Broncos sponsors.

I'll say it once and I'll say it again. Clubs SHOULD be forced to disclose player salaries ot the public to PROVE they are not over the salary cap.

If the NRL think they are under he cap, they'd better find the second set of books. Storm had NRL fooled for a number of years before someone blew the whistle on them.

What a joke, there are players who bust their ass every single game for a small portion of that amount and Inglis has 4 or 5 good games a season to get the royal treatment from the NRL.

Broncos to be unstoppable for the next few years IMO (the new Storm) C'mon Doggies, smash them in 2011 :D
