There is probably truth in Gus saying he hasn't spoken to anyone taking over as head coach.
It's all a play of words, he hasn't spoken to any potential coaches directly but would have spoken to their managers.
There is no way he hasn't being talking to managers and seeing what their clients can offer the club and at what price, when they are both on the same page he will start speaking to them directly.

Gus has lied multiple times to the media, it's a part of his job and it's in the club's best interest.

Sorry, lying is not something the Club or fans can condone. Certainly, he can say he's had talks with prospective coaches, he can say he's made certain potential coaches an offer, he can say he's waiting to hear back from prospective coaches. It's commercial in confidence. He's under no obligation to reveal who's he's spoken to, who his or the Clubs preference is. Deceiving people by saying he's spoken to nobody, or had no applicants if this is a lie, is not something any fan, or sponsor or the Club would want.

Just something to think about - my gardener played juniors for Gus at Penrith when he took over the show and also played for Mounties under Potts. All wiki confirmed. Asked him about a few things on Friday.
- he said Gus plays with the media and will get what Gus wants. Gus's way or the highway basically
- reckons Potts is a weird cat and will always struggle with the big personalities u get at the top of the coaching run. tbh - having seen some of his interviews with that in mind, think its a fair statement
- doesn't really rate any of the penrith coaching staff as they have excellent cattle and systems to work with
