A man has been shot dead by police after repeatedly stabbing a woman in the face at a park in Melbourne's north-west.
Police were called to John Coutts Reserve at Gladstone Park about 3.30pm, swarming the scene of the stabbing incident.
The man, believed to be in his 30s, continued to "seriously assault" the woman after police arrived, prompting officers to fire gunshots at the attacker.
The man died at the scene and the woman was taken to hospital in a critical condition. Assistant Commissioner Luke Cornelius described the incident as a "frenzied attack" on the older woman.
He said the man and woman were known to each other, possibly being family members. Police did not believe the stabbing was a random attack.
The victim has not yet been formally identified due to the extent of her injuries. Asst Comm.
Cornelius said he believed the attending junior police officers acted "appropriately" as they had urged the attacker to stop.
"A lot happens in 30 seconds, including time to issue a warning, time to give a person an opportunity to accede to that warning and do what they're being asked," he said.
"If those warnings aren't complied with, and they continue in attacking another individual, then of course police have to take action."
The officers were not physically injured, although Asst Comm. Cornelius admitted they were "terribly shaken".
"They've done the best to stop a terrible attack from continuing and, tragically, despite their best efforts, it has resulted in the death of a male, who we believe was the assailant, and also very, very serious injuries to the female, who was the subject of that frenzied attack," Asst Comm. Cornelius said.
"My heart really goes out to those members.
"These were junior members, early in their career, and they found themselves having to make one of the worst-possible decisions that any member has to make in their career." Aerial images captured by 9News showed two people being attended to by paramedics.
Police called for people who witnessed the incident to come forward. Homicide Squad detectives will investigate the incident, overseen by the Professional Standards Command, as per protocol when a police firearm is discharged.
