Very valid points Baz, and they can be decently protective. The problem for humans is that a lot of the time we have more than one thought process going. I know, I know, it seems that a lot of people don't even have 1 thought process going on (parra fans for example), let alone multiple thought processes, but hear me out. Even at the very moment you are looking at a picture and consciously thinking "pfft, what a joke", an unconscious thought process can be alive which, if expressed, would sound something like "that looks like an amazing life", or "whats wrong with me, that I can't do anything I want?". Depending on the strength of those unconscious thought processes, anxiety etc can increase, with some pretty remarkable physical symptomology.
The only unconscious thoughts I have are “I’m hungry” “I’m thirsty” and “I’m horny”.

I've got a friend who works in IT security who says that LinkedIn is a dream website for hackers etc who want to steal your identity. Most people on there use their real name, with a real photo of them, has their complete work history and often has their personal address, especially so if they've uploaded a resume. That's enough of a reason to hate it. But I especially despise it because it's basically a never ending stream of soul-destroying corporate speak.
I reckon Microsoft also destroyed LinkedIn.
Once it was pretty much a repository for digital business cards with the occasional business related tale (which I pretty much never read). Now it’s constant notifications (though I turned them off long ago) and products and reminders to ‘celebrate’ how long you’ve been connected to someone and all sorts of crap they use to drive traffic and ad revenue. So just like any other social media site it’s full of 99% useless information and more annoying that it is useful.

People on Facebook who like to show off their flashy lives get 0 respect from me. Photos of people having fun and socialising are different as they're memories and not material things. Don't get socialising mixed up with show offs or posers though.

I still look at Facebook to see my pics of my great nephews in Sydney as they're getting older. Hardly ever communicate with anyone on there. Have plenty of friends that would happily try to keep up some semblance of old friendships through it. But I actually get the shits about being told I should come and visit.

I used to spend most of my holidays rotating between visiting family and friends which was never reciprocal. Even traveled overseas to see mates from school and uni until they failed to visit when they were within a 2 hour drive of my place visiting family. So I tend to get pissed off that them rambling on messenger when they're drunk is supposed to pass for friendship.

End of the day, it's a good way to see pics of my family that I don't make time to see as frequently as I used to. But doesn't substitute for actual contact with loved ones.
