Nah, you can delete it quite easily. Most people just deactivate the account so they can re-activate it later. But you can also delete it which wipes out every post you ever made.

It's generally a good practice if you're applying for a new job. Wipe your account then create a new account and set it to private.
When my father passed away, we were able to have his account actually deleted a few months later. Funny enough, I found Facebook really good to deal with in this regard.

There's definitely some downsides to it. Articles shared on Facebook would often show enough of the article that people wouldn't need to open it, but it also lead to the click bait phenomenon that brought lots of clicks and advertising revenue to News sites.

With the news sites now blocked, those sites are losing a lot of revenue. Facebook was basically free advertising for them. That's why so many news sources were against the government forcing Facebook to pay. They knew it would result in them losing money.
So it wasn’t the news sites pushing fir this is was more the government so they could tax them?? That’s a legit question I haven’t really followed this story too closely.

It definitely provides the media agencies more traffic. From what I understand of the government's proposed legislation, they want Facebook to pay for simply one of your friends sharing and article and that share appearing on your news feed. So as a user you don't even share that article, nor open it, you simply scroll past it because someone else shared it and the government wants Facebook to pay for this.

Not forgetting that a lot of those articles (for some media companies like DT, The Australian) are behind a paywall, so you have to be a subscriber to open the article in the first place.

Facebook have to also strongly take into consideration that if they agree to this government's laws, other nations are going to use these laws as a yardstick, effectively fucking Facebook worldwide.

The simple fact is, again this government is showing it's loyalties to murdoch and wants us to go back to 1950s. There's no ifs or buts

I should also add in, I find it hilarious that for "free market" proponents, in a space that is very much a free market, conservatives want to regulate and put in rules. But of course socialism only exists for them when it trickles up and it's bow tied as "free market capitalism"

I 'm so relieved I wont be getting those click bait articles where you see something mildly interesting, click on it and then they actually think you're going to keep scrolling for 20 odd pages of ads till the end to see the zinger moment. So annoying lol.

I thought it was impossible to actually delete your account?
Deactivate but you can delete all info apart from what you signed up with

But doesn't that info/comment you post stay out there through a Google search?

I don't blame Google or Facebook for this though. It's the Australian government's fault. I have no idea how they thought this would help the Australian press.
I’m not suggesting the proposed legislation is 100% correctly structured but I’m pleased to see Governments stop turning a blind eye to the digital giants. They have to adjust their algorithms and pay their share, otherwise it’s akin to downloading a movie. Facebook are bullies, I’ve dealt with them through my work and they had an ‘our way or the highway’ mentality. Pre C-19 I’d spend a lot of time in Dublin and all the digital giant Euro HQ’s are there due the generous corporate tax rate of ~12% - Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google etc. I also saw some other examples of their predatory tactics whilst there.

I’m pro-disruption and innovation and don’t support the traditional media companies for the sake of it but at the end of the day they produce content and Facebook is a content sharing platform that makes billions in the game. Yes, others benefit from exposure to their platform, but similar to how Spotify only pay a pittance to musicians for streaming royalties, it shouldn’t be a ‘take it or leave it’ situation simply because there’s been a lack of governance.

I’ve never had Facebook so don’t care about the changes to their platform - I never understood the attraction and think it made people lazier and less social but that’s a different conversation.

I agree and even worse when posts of theirs still pop up after they are gone. Good luck trying to get any customer service or answers from Facebook. They are a law upon themselves

That's the thing - was there a single news outlet that wanted the government to do this?

Edit: apart from newscorp?
Don't think so. I know many were actively petitioning the government to pull back the bill.

Kind of. More the government answering to Murdoch's demands.
