Portugal got out of jail in the last minute, that was 100% a penalty for France that wasn’t awarded, especially if you consider the other soft penalties given.

it was a penalty as the French player got beyond Fernandes and into the box and Fernandes stomped on the back of the leg... it did not look intentional but it was a foul within the box

VAR should have reversed the refs decision and given the penalty. It was a clear foul in the box.
These are the kind of decisions where the use of VAR loses its credibility.
VAR should also have overturned the soft penalties the ref awarded
