Storm to play home Preliminary Final on AFL Grand Final day

http://www.rleague.com/db/article.php?id=34557

The NRL has today announced that Melbourne Storm's blockbuster home Preliminary Final against either the Brisbane Broncos or St George Illawarra will be played at Etihad Stadium on the night of the AFL Grand Final.

The announcement has made what is arguably the biggest sporting day on the Melbourne calendar even bigger, and Storm CEO Brian Waldron couldn't be happier the club are scheduled to play on such an important day.

"The atmosphere in Melbourne at this time of the year is amazing, and for the Storm to now be able to play its part with a huge night Preliminary Final at Etihad Stadium on the same day as the AFL Grand Final will make it even more special," said Waldron.

"It gives Victorian sports fans an opportunity to enjoy the AFL Grand Final during the day, and then support the Melbourne Storm that night as we take on either the Broncos or the Dragons.

"And given our history with both of these clubs, we expect to get a very healthy crowd to Etihad Stadium for the game."

The Storm's rivalry with St George dates back to the 1999 grand final when Melbourne came back from a 14-0 half-time deficit to defeat the more fancied Dragons 20-18. The win gave the club its first premiership in only its second year of existence, the win causing then captain Glenn Lazarus to do cartwheels across the ANZ Stadium pitch.

And who can forget the 2008 semi-final between the Storm and the Broncos at Suncorp Stadium, when Greg Inglis scored a try in the last minute to snatch victory from Brisbane who had led all game and had one foot in the Preliminary Final? Or the heartbreaking 2006 Grand Final defeat at the hands of the Broncos when the Storm had won the minor premiership and were red-hot favourites to win the Grand Final?

"This is a unique opportunity for sports fans to be a part of an extraordinary football day involving two codes the likes of which this city has never seen before," said Waldron.

"First, the sporting public will get to witness an all-Victorian AFL Grand Final whether at the game or watching on TV, then they can head down to Etihad Stadium to watch Melbourne's very own NRL club play for the chance to be in their fourth NRL Grand Final in a row.

"I encourage everyone to get on board the Storm bandwagon and get down to Etihad Stadium for the Preliminary Final and watch NRL football at its best against one of our most bitter rivals as the team goes about making Melbourne proud.

"It's made that one day in September now that little bit bigger."

WHAT: NRL Preliminary Final
WHO: Melbourne Storm v Brisbane Broncos or St George Illawarra Dragons
WHERE: Etihad Stadium, Melbourne
WHEN: Saturday, September 26th
TIME: 7.45pm

Tickets are available through Ticketmaster on 136 100, online at www.ticketmaster.com.au, or at any Ticketmaster outlet.

Storm to play home Preliminary Final on AFL Grand Final day

http://www.rleague.com/db/article.php?id=34557
The AFL has today announced that Melbourne Breeze's blockbuster home Preliminary Final against either the Horsies or Dragons will be played at Etihad Stadium on the night of the AFL Grand Final.

The announcement has made what is arguably the shiittiest sporting day on the Melbourne calendar even shiittier, and Breeze CEO Brian Waldron couldn't give a f_ck the club is scheduled to play on such a shiitty day.

"The atmosphere in Melbourne at this time of the year is shiithouse, and for the Breeze to now be able to play its part with a dull night Preliminary Final at Etihad Stadium on the same day as the AFL Grand Final will make it even more retarded," said Waldron.

"It gives Mexican sports fans an opportunity to enjoy the AFL Grand Final during the day, and then stagger in piissed to the Melbourne Breeze game that night as we take on either the Horsies or the Dragons.

"And given our history with both of these clubs, we expect to get a very drunk and bored crowd to Etihad Stadium for the game."

The Breeze's rivalry with the Dragons dates back to the 1999 grand final when Melbourne came back from a 14-0 half-time deficit to defeat the more fancied Dragons 20-18. The win gave the club its first premiership in only its second year of existence, the win causing then captain Glenn Lazarus to vomit across the ANZ Stadium pitch.

what has that got to do with anything, in 2006 against brisbane at the SFS we got 30k with hardly any Brisbane fans. If its at the SFS against the Titans we will get over 30k and the atmosphere will be crazy (would still be crazy at ANZ against parra but as a stadium sfs sh!ts on it)

Yeah but against Parra, we'd get roughly 50K to ANZ.

Remember the semi-final in 2007 champ? the atmosphere was absolutely electric.
